Claude for Google Docs, Sheets and Slides Is Here: What the New Sidebar Add-On Does

Claude for Google Docs, Sheets and Slides is now in public beta, and anyone on a paid Claude plan can add it from the Google Workspace Marketplace. It opens as a sidebar inside your file, so you don’t have to copy text back and forth between tabs.

  • Launched October 6, 2026, as a public beta, according to 9to5Google.
  • Available to all paid Claude users.
  • Works in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides.
  • An “ask before edits” mode lets you approve changes first.

What Claude for Google Docs actually does

Think of it as an assistant that lives next to your document. You ask for a change, and Claude works on the file itself instead of handing you text to paste.

In Docs, it can fix spelling, rewrite sections, or restyle parts of a document while keeping your formatting. You get a preview of the change before it lands.

That preview matters. Anyone who has pasted AI text into a formatted document and watched the fonts break will see why.

What it does in Sheets and Slides

Sheets is where this gets practical for a lot of people. Claude can write formulas, build tables using the context already in your sheet, and use extra files you upload to create new content.

In Slides, it builds slides using the layouts and themes already in your deck, and it can flag elements that need updating. So a new slide should look like it belongs, not like a pasted-in outsider.

Here’s the quick comparison of what 9to5Google reports for each app.

App What Claude can do Good for
Docs Fix spelling, rewrite sections, restyle text, preview edits Tightening drafts and reports
Sheets Write formulas, build tables from context, use uploaded files Cleanup and quick analysis
Slides Create slides in your layouts and themes, spot items to update Refreshing an existing deck

The table shows the same pattern in all three apps: Claude works inside your existing file and style, not around it.

How to install it and stay in control

Search for Claude in the Google Workspace Marketplace and install the add-on. You can also reach it through new Claude connectors for these apps, per the same report.

Once it’s running, switch on “ask before edits” if you want to review each proposed change. I’d start there, especially with shared files that other people rely on.

If you’ve read our look at Google Docs Markdown editing, this is another sign that Docs is turning into a place where you can pick your AI tool. Google’s own Gemini is still built in, and Claude is now an alternative.

Three low-risk ways to try it first

A new add-on is easiest to judge on small jobs where a mistake costs you nothing. Make a copy of a file you care about, or pick something you wrote this week.

In Docs, ask Claude to tighten one rough paragraph and compare the preview with your original. In Sheets, ask for a formula you’d normally have to look up, then check the result against a few rows you can verify by hand.

In Slides, ask it to add one slide to a deck that already has a theme. If the new slide matches your layout without fuss, you’ve learned the most useful thing about it in about five minutes.

What we don’t know yet

It’s a beta, so expect rough edges. The reports I found don’t spell out usage limits or whether the add-on counts against your normal Claude allowance.

If that’s a concern, check your plan details in your Claude account before you lean on it for big jobs. Our breakdown of Claude Sonnet 5.5 pricing is a useful reference for how Anthropic prices its models.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Claude for Google Docs free?

The add-on is open to paid Claude users. The reports don’t mention a free tier, so a free Claude account probably won’t cover it.

Where do I get the Claude add-on for Google Sheets and Slides?

It comes from the Google Workspace Marketplace, and the same add-on covers Docs, Sheets and Slides.

Can Claude edit my document without asking?

Only if you let it. The “ask before edits” mode shows proposed changes so you can accept or reject them.

Does this replace Gemini in Google Workspace?

No. Gemini’s built-in tools remain, and Claude is an extra option you can add.

My take: if you already pay for Claude and live in Google Docs, install it and try it on a low-stakes file with “ask before edits” on. If you don’t pay for Claude, this alone isn’t a reason to start, and it’s worth waiting until the beta settles.
