Ray-Ban Meta Glasses Recording Without “Hey Meta”: What Meta Fixed and How to Check Yours

The Android Authority report on Ray-Ban Meta glasses recording conversations without the “Hey Meta” wake phrase has Meta saying the issue is fixed. But Meta hasn’t said what went wrong, so it’s worth checking your own voice logs.

Here’s the short version of what is and isn’t known right now:

  • Reports surfaced on October 13, 2026, mainly from one owner with three pairs (Gen 2 and Gen 3).
  • Recordings and transcripts showed up in the Meta AI app, even with “Respond without Hey Meta” turned off.
  • Meta’s statement: “This issue has been resolved.” No cause, firmware version or date was given.
  • Android Authority could not reproduce the problem, and no one has said how many owners were affected.

Treat this as an unconfirmed but serious privacy report that the company says it has dealt with.

What Ray-Ban Meta owners actually reported

The original claim came from a Reddit owner who said three pairs of glasses saved ordinary conversations as audio and text transcripts. Those entries appeared in the Meta AI app, not just when the owner spoke to the assistant on purpose.

The owner also said the indicator light sometimes came on during normal talk, and that it began after a recent firmware update. Several commenters described similar unexplained activations.

That’s anecdotal. Android Authority says it found no proof the behavior was widespread, so don’t assume your glasses are doing it. Do assume it’s worth five minutes to look.

What Meta says it fixed, and what it left out

Meta gave Android Authority two sentences. The first says the issue is resolved. The second says you can manage, review and delete your voice logs with Meta AI in settings.

What’s missing is the useful part. Meta hasn’t named a cause, the affected models, the firmware or app version involved, or when the fix shipped. MIXED lists the same open questions, including what happens to audio from the unprompted activations.

Without those answers, “fixed” is a claim you can’t verify. Your own voice log is the only evidence you can check.

Ray-Ban Meta glasses recording rules: US and UK differ

Even when the glasses work as intended, where you live changes what Meta keeps. According to VR.org’s reading of Meta’s voice privacy notice, the two regions work very differently.

Topic US UK
Voice storage Stored by default; no setting to turn it off Optional; you can switch it off
Unintended activations Deleted within 90 days if flagged as a false wake, otherwise kept up to a year Deleted right after processing when storage is off
Does Meta AI still work? Yes Yes, even with storage off
Other regions (checked Oct. 16) Canada and Australia show the US wording Ireland and Germany show the UK wording

The US storage switch was removed on April 29, 2025, per the same report. In practice, US owners can delete entries after the fact or turn off voice activation, but can’t stop the storage itself.

It’s also unclear whether false-wake recordings skip human review before deletion. Meta hasn’t said.

Why one report still matters

Smart glasses are different from a phone in your pocket. They sit on your face, they’re hard to spot as recording devices, and the people around you never agreed to anything.

That’s why a wake-word slip matters more here. A phone that records by mistake captures you. Glasses can capture a coworker, a friend or a stranger on the train, and none of them can check your voice log.

It also explains why the vague fix bothers people. If the cause was a firmware change, owners deserve to know which version to avoid and which one to trust.

How to check and clean up your voice logs

Meta didn’t publish exact menu steps, and app menus change between versions. This is the general route:

  1. Open the Meta AI app and go to your glasses’ settings.
  2. Find the privacy section and the voice activity log.
  3. Look for entries you don’t remember triggering, especially ones that read like normal conversation.
  4. Delete anything you don’t want kept.

If you find recordings from after the reported date and you hadn’t spoken to the assistant, screenshot them before deleting. Then tell Meta support so there’s a record on your side.

Wearing the glasses somewhere that restricts recording is a separate matter. Our guide to British Airways smart glasses rules covers what you can and can’t film on board.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Ray-Ban Meta glasses always listening?

They listen for the “Hey Meta” wake phrase, as most voice assistants do. The reports say some pairs saved audio without it. Meta says that’s now fixed.

Which Ray-Ban Meta models were affected?

The main report involved Gen 2 and Gen 3 pairs. Meta hasn’t confirmed any list of models, so assume any current pair could be involved.

Can I turn off voice recording storage?

In the UK, yes, according to Meta’s notice as summarized by VR.org. In the US, no. You can delete entries or disable voice activation.

Is the glasses’ indicator light reliable?

The owner said the light sometimes came on without Meta AI being invoked. It’s a useful cue, but one report isn’t proof either way.

My take: don’t panic, but don’t take “resolved” on faith either. Spend five minutes in the voice log now, delete what you don’t want, and check again in a week or two. If you wear these in meetings or around other people, tell them first. Until Meta explains what went wrong, that’s the safest habit.
