Nothing OS 5.0, the company’s Android 17 update, is now rolling out, and the first stable build went to the Phone (3). Most other recent Nothing phones follow between November and January, while three older models are being left behind.
Here’s the short version before the details.
- Nothing OS 5.0 is built on Android 17.
- Phone (3) got the stable build first, with a staggered rollout for the rest.
- Phone (1), Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1 will not get it.
- Dates are “indicative” and can shift by region and carrier.
What Nothing OS 5.0 changes on your phone
The headline change is a refreshed look built around the Geist typeface, with redesigned Settings, new status-bar icons and smoother animations. The home screen gets transparent widgets, wallpaper-aware colors and new clock faces.
There’s also a dedicated Glyph app for lights and sounds, plus a Glyph Timer for countdowns. Android 17 itself adds separate Notifications and Quick Settings panels, an updated Recents menu and expanded dark theme.
One handy extra: Quick Share can now send files to an iPhone using a QR code. If you swap files with iPhone-owning friends, you’ll likely use this one the most.
Nothing OS 5.0 rollout schedule: when does your phone get it?
According to TechRepublic, Nothing calls these dates indicative. Business Today reports the Phone (3) stable rollout started on October 12.
| Phone | Open Beta | Stable release |
|---|---|---|
| Phone (3) | Open since Aug 26 | Rolling out since Oct 12 |
| Phone (4a) Pro, (4a), (3a) Pro, (3a) | Sept | Early November |
| Phone (2a), (2a) Plus | Mid-October | Mid-November |
| Phone (3a) Lite | None | Late December |
| Phone (4b) | Mid-December | Mid-January 2027 |
| CMF Phone 2 Pro | None | Mid-January 2027 |
If your phone is a 4a or 3a model, expect the update around early November. Don’t panic if a friend in another country gets it first, since carriers and regions move at different speeds.
Which Nothing phones miss out on Android 17
Three models have reached the end of major software support: the Phone (1), the Phone (2) and the CMF Phone 1. They won’t get Nothing OS 5.0.
That’s the usual fate of older phones, and other brands face the same cliff. Our look at the Pixel 6 end of updates covers what to do when your phone stops getting major releases.
New AI tools: Essential Voice and Apps Builder
Nothing is pushing its Essential suite harder in this release. These are the main pieces to know about.
- Essential Voice: real-time transcription and better summaries.
- Essential Apps Builder: make small on-device tools by describing them in plain language.
- Essential Space: Smart Collections and improved search.
Per TechRepublic, Model Context Protocol support for Essential Space is planned for October, a redesigned capture experience from November, and real-time translation later in 2026. Treat those as plans, not promises.
How to check for the Android 17 update
Open Settings, then System, then System updates, and tap to check. If nothing shows up yet, your region’s turn hasn’t come.
Phone (3) owners can also join the Open Beta through Nothing Beta Hub. Going back to stable from a beta wipes your data, so back up first. If you rely on your phone every day, waiting for the stable build is the safer call.
Once the update lands, give the phone an hour or so to finish background optimizing. Battery drain and a warm back right after a big update are normal and usually settle by the next day.
Samsung owners are in a similar waiting game. We covered it in the Galaxy S26 One UI 9 update guide.
Should you install Nothing OS 5.0 right away?
For most people, yes, once it reaches your phone. A major Android version brings security and privacy work you don’t get from monthly patches, and Android 17 also tightens how apps use memory.
There are a few reasons to hold off for a day or two. Early builds sometimes have bugs that get fixed in a quick follow-up patch, and some apps need time to catch up with Android 17 behavior changes. If you use your phone for work, charge it fully, back up your photos and chats, and update on a quiet evening.
Also note that two promised pieces, the redesigned launcher and the Micrographics lock-screen clock, are not in the beta. They arrive with the general release, so beta users may see a slightly different home screen than stable users.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Nothing OS 5.0 based on Android 17?
Yes. Nothing describes it as its Android 17-based software update.
Will my Nothing Phone (2) get Nothing OS 5.0?
No. The Phone (2), Phone (1) and CMF Phone 1 have reached the end of major software support.
When does the Nothing Phone (3a) get Android 17?
Early November is the current target for the Phone (3a) and (3a) Pro. The Phone (3a) Lite is later, in late December.
Is it safe to install the beta?
It won’t erase your data on install, but it can hurt battery life and stability. Rolling back wipes the phone.
If you own a Phone (3), install the stable build now and enjoy the new Glyph app. For everyone else, there’s no reason to hunt for the beta: the stable update is close, and waiting costs you only a few weeks.
