One UI 9 Galaxy S23 Update Is Here: Build Numbers and How to Install

The One UI 9 Galaxy S23 update has started rolling out in the US. Samsung’s Android 17-based software is now reaching the Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra, according to Droid Life. You can grab it from Settings if your phone has been offered it.

If you’re still on One UI 8.x, here’s what to expect, how to check for it, and what to do before you tap Install.

Quick facts first:

  • Devices: Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra (US models)
  • Software: One UI 9, built on Android 17
  • Where: the US, through Samsung and carrier partners such as Verizon
  • How: Settings > Software update > Download and install
  • Size: not stated in the report; Droid Life only calls it “large”

That’s the whole picture in ten seconds. The rest of this post covers the details and the gotchas.

Which Galaxy phones just got the One UI 9 update?

The S23 family isn’t alone. 9to5Google’s tracker shows the S23 series, Galaxy Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5, A56, A36, A37 and A27 as newly added to the Android 17 list. Droid Life says the S23 rollout follows the Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5.

Samsung hasn’t confirmed an exact schedule, so don’t panic if your phone doesn’t show the update today. Rollouts are staggered by carrier and region, and unlocked phones can land before or after carrier models.

If you own a newer phone, our earlier post on the Galaxy A37 One UI 9 update in the US covers how the mid-range rollout played out.

Firmware builds to look for

Droid Life lists these US build numbers. If your build matches, you’re on the One UI 9 release.

Galaxy model US firmware build
Galaxy S23 S911USQU8GZIF
Galaxy S23+ S916USQU8GZIF
Galaxy S23 Ultra S918USQU8GZIF

Check yours under Settings > About phone > Software information. Build numbers can differ on carrier-locked or non-US models, so treat this table as a guide for US phones only.

How to install One UI 9 on your Galaxy S23

The update is a normal over-the-air download. Do these steps in order and you’ll avoid most problems.

  1. Back up your phone with Samsung Cloud, Smart Switch or Google One.
  2. Charge to at least 50% and connect to Wi-Fi.
  3. Open Settings > Software update > Download and install.
  4. Let it finish and restart, then wait a few minutes before judging battery or speed.

Free up some storage too. Major updates often need several gigabytes of headroom to unpack, and a nearly full phone is the most common reason an install stalls. Clear old downloads and unused apps before you start.

It also helps to know your Google and Samsung account passwords before updating, since some phones ask you to sign in again afterward.

A fresh major update re-indexes photos and re-optimizes apps in the background. Your phone can run warm and drain faster for a day or two, which is normal.

What’s new in One UI 9, and what isn’t confirmed

Droid Life doesn’t list the changes in its S23 post. PhoneArena’s roundup reports a redesigned Samsung Internet with an Ask AI feature, a Gallery selection box, new Notes tools and a more flexible Quick Panel.

It also says Gemini Intelligence, Google’s on-device AI agent, may be limited to phones with flagship chips. That’s reported, not confirmed, and the S23 is now three years old. Don’t buy into any single AI feature until you see it on your own phone.

The same roundup says the Galaxy S22 series won’t get One UI 9. If you’re on an S22, this is the end of the line for major updates.

Should you worry about battery drain after updating?

Some owners of newer Galaxy phones reported faster battery loss after One UI 9. We covered it in our post on One UI 9 battery drain on Galaxy S24 and S25. Nobody has reported a widespread S23 problem yet, but it’s early.

If your battery tanks after a few days, restart the phone, update your apps in Google Play, and check Settings > Battery for the apps using the most power. A factory reset should be your last resort, not your first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Galaxy S23 get One UI 9?

Yes. Droid Life reports One UI 9 is rolling out to the Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra in the US.

Why don’t I see the update yet?

Samsung stages rollouts by region and carrier. Check Settings > Software update again over the next few days.

Is One UI 9 based on Android 17?

Yes. One UI 9 is built on Android 17, according to Droid Life and PhoneArena.

Will the Galaxy S22 get One UI 9?

No. PhoneArena reports the S22 series is not on the update list.

Can I go back to One UI 8 after updating?

Not easily. Samsung doesn’t offer a simple rollback, which is why a backup before updating matters.

Our take: install it, but not in a rush. Back up tonight, update on Wi-Fi this weekend, and don’t judge the battery until day three. If your S23 still runs fine on One UI 8, waiting a week for early bug reports costs you nothing.
