Surface Laptop Ultra Price Starts at $2,599: What You Get and When It Ships

The Surface Laptop Ultra price starts at $2,599, and preorders open today, October 7, 2026. Microsoft’s most powerful laptop ships on October 16, according to Windows Central. It’s built around Nvidia’s RTX Spark chip and a magnetic USB-C port that lets go when someone trips on your cable.

Quick facts before the details:

  • Starting price: $2,599 for the entry model
  • Preorders: open October 7, 2026
  • Shipping: expected October 16, 2026
  • Screen: 15-inch mini-LED touchscreen, up to 2,000 nits peak HDR
  • Chip: Nvidia RTX Spark, up to 20 CPU cores and 128GB of memory

Microsoft first showed the laptop at Computex in June without a price. The wait is over, and the number is higher than a typical Windows laptop but lower than some people feared.

What the Surface Laptop Ultra price gets you at $2,599

The entry model pairs an 18-core RTX Spark chip with 5,120 GPU cores and 24GB of RAM. That’s a lot of graphics muscle for a thin laptop, and it runs on Arm rather than the usual Intel or AMD parts.

You also get the 15-inch PixelSense mini-LED touchscreen, which Pureinfotech calls the brightest Microsoft has put in a Surface. The trackpad is the largest on any Surface, with the new Windows 11 haptic feedback. Ports include HDMI, USB-C, USB-A, an SD card reader and a headphone jack.

Prices for higher configurations haven’t been confirmed. Leaker Roland Quandt, as Notebookcheck reports, expects the range to run from under about $3,000 to over $7,000. Treat that as a rumor until Microsoft lists the full lineup.

The breakaway USB-C port, explained

Microsoft says this is the first laptop with a breakaway USB-C port. It’s held by magnets, so a tugged cable pops free instead of dragging the laptop off your desk.

The twist is that it’s a standard USB-C port. Any charger, dock or drive should work, which the old Surface Connect and Apple’s MagSafe never offered. Whether the magnets are strong enough to hold a heavy dock cable in place is something reviews will have to test.

Entry model vs. the top-end Surface Laptop Ultra

The two ends of the lineup look very different. Here’s how they compare, based on Microsoft’s launch details and the configurations reported so far.

Spec Entry model Top model (reported)
CPU cores 18 20
GPU cores 5,120 6,144
Memory 24GB Up to 128GB
Price From $2,599 (confirmed) Not confirmed
Best for Creative work, coding, everyday power use Running 120-billion-parameter AI models locally

The 128GB memory is shared between the CPU and GPU. That’s what lets the laptop hold large AI models in memory, up to one petaflop of AI compute by Microsoft’s count.

If this sounds like the chip in Microsoft’s desktop dev box, it is. We covered that one in our Surface RTX Spark Dev Box price breakdown.

Who should buy it, and who should wait

This laptop makes sense for a narrow group. If you build or test AI tools and want to run big models without a cloud bill, the memory ceiling is the draw.

Video editors and 3D artists get a bright screen and strong graphics too. Everyone else is paying for power they won’t use, and a regular Windows laptop at half the price will do the job.

One caution: this is an Arm machine. Most popular apps run fine, but check that your must-have tools, especially older games and niche drivers, work before you order. Our October 7 event preview has more on where Windows 11 is heading with these chips.

What we still don’t know about the Surface Laptop Ultra

Microsoft’s launch answered the big questions, but several gaps remain. These are the ones that could change whether $2,599 feels fair.

  • Battery life: no figure has been published, and a power-hungry GPU can drain a battery fast.
  • Storage options and the cost of each upgrade tier.
  • Weight and thickness, which matter for a 15-inch laptop you plan to carry.
  • Pricing for the 32GB, 48GB, 64GB and 128GB memory options.

Battery life is the one to watch. Arm chips are usually efficient, but a laptop built for AI work may behave differently once the GPU is busy. Wait for independent reviews before you commit to a high-end model, since preorders can usually be cancelled before shipping.

Also worth knowing: the Surface Laptop Ultra is not the only RTX Spark device. Other makers are expected to ship laptops with the same chip later this fall, which could mean cheaper options with similar power.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Surface Laptop Ultra price?

It starts at $2,599 for the entry model with 24GB of RAM. Higher configurations haven’t been priced officially yet.

When does the Surface Laptop Ultra ship?

Preorders open October 7, 2026, and shipping is expected to begin October 16, 2026.

How much memory can it have?

Up to 128GB of unified memory, shared by the CPU and GPU. That’s enough for local AI models up to roughly 120 billion parameters.

Does it run on Intel or AMD?

No. It uses Nvidia’s Arm-based RTX Spark chip, so app compatibility is worth checking first.

Is the breakaway USB-C port a normal USB-C port?

Yes. Microsoft says it accepts any USB-C accessory, with magnets that release the cable if it’s pulled.

Our take

At $2,599, the Surface Laptop Ultra is a serious tool, not a laptop for browsing and email. Buy it if local AI work or heavy creative apps are your daily job. Otherwise, wait for reviews to confirm battery life and Arm app support, since neither is clear yet.
