Microsoft October 7 Event: Surface Laptop Ultra, RTX Spark, and What’s Next for Windows 11

The Microsoft October 7 event is Microsoft’s first big Windows showcase in more than two years, and it’s all about running AI on your own PC. Expect the Surface Laptop Ultra, Nvidia’s RTX Spark chip, and a batch of Windows 11 changes built for them. Don’t expect Windows 12.

Here’s the short version you can scan in ten seconds.

  • When: Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at 10:00 AM PT (1 PM ET / 6 PM BST / 10:30 PM IST)
  • Where to watch: a free YouTube livestream from Microsoft
  • Who’s on stage: Satya Nadella, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Windows and Surface chief Pavan Davuluri
  • Star of the show: the 15-inch Surface Laptop Ultra with RTX Spark and up to 128GB of memory
  • Not happening: Windows 12 — Microsoft has said a new OS isn’t part of the plan

If you’re shopping for a high-end laptop this fall, this is the event that decides whether you wait or buy now.

Why the Microsoft October 7 Event Matters More Than a Normal Launch

Microsoft confirmed the date with a short post on the Windows account on X: “Save the date: October 7 at 10:00 AM PT. Windows. @Surface. @NVIDIARTXSpark.” Pavan Davuluri and design chief Marcus Ash reshared it soon after.

That three-word pitch tells you a lot. This isn’t a Surface refresh with a side of software. It’s Microsoft and Nvidia betting that the next reason to buy a PC is local AI — big models running on your laptop instead of in someone’s data center.

According to Windows Latest, the show takes place in San Francisco and is the first major Windows event since the Copilot+ PC launch in May 2024. If you read our breakdown of Project Zenith, Microsoft’s Windows build for running AI models locally, this is the consumer side of that same push.

Surface Laptop Ultra: The Specs Microsoft Has Already Confirmed

Microsoft first showed the Surface Laptop Ultra at Computex in June, so most of the hardware is no secret. What’s missing is the price and the ship date. Here’s what’s official so far, per Windows Central and Notebookcheck.

Spec Surface Laptop Ultra (confirmed)
Chip Nvidia RTX Spark: 20-core Arm CPU plus Blackwell RTX GPU (up to 6,144 GPU cores)
AI performance Up to 1 petaflop
Memory Up to 128GB unified memory, full CUDA support
Display 15-inch mini-LED PixelSense Ultra, 2880 x 1920, 3:2, up to 2,000 nits HDR
Ports 3x USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, full-size SD card reader, headphone jack
Weight and size Under 4.5 lbs (2 kg), under 18mm thick
Upgrades User-replaceable SSD
Colors Platinum and Nightfall

The headline number is that 128GB of shared memory. It’s what lets the laptop run AI models of up to about 120 billion parameters locally, which is something no Windows laptop could really do before.

The ports deserve a nod too. HDMI, USB-A, and an SD slot on a premium thin laptop is a rare and welcome throwback.

What Will the Surface Laptop Ultra Cost?

Officially, nobody knows yet. Microsoft held back pricing in June, pointing to unstable RAM and storage costs — a problem we covered in our piece on the RAM price crisis and what it means for your next laptop.

The best hint so far comes from leaker Roland Quandt. As Notebookcheck reported, he spotted an entry model with the lower-end RTX Spark chip, 32GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage at around €2,000. Quandt himself said he doubts that price is real and called the data incomplete, so treat it as a rumor.

For context, the same report notes that higher-end RTX Spark laptops are tipped to start around $2,899 in the US. Our earlier RTX Spark price and release date guide has the full spread of estimates across other brands.

The Windows 11 Changes You’ll Actually Notice

The software news may matter more to you than the hardware, because some of it will reach ordinary Windows 11 PCs too. Microsoft has been teasing four big pieces ahead of the show.

  • Microsoft execution containers: a sandbox for AI agents. Developers declare what an agent can touch — files, network, and so on — and Windows enforces those limits.
  • Workload Profile Scheduling: a reworked task scheduler that spreads work across RTX Spark’s 20 Arm cores more smartly.
  • Memory controls: on supported PCs, you’ll be able to decide how much unified memory goes to graphics and AI.
  • A faster Prism: Microsoft’s x86 emulator, tuned for RTX Spark so older Windows apps run better on Arm.

The execution containers are the piece to watch. AI agents that can click around your PC are useful, but only if they can’t wander into files they have no business seeing.

Windows on Arm Gets Its Biggest Test Yet

RTX Spark is an Arm chip, which means the old question comes back: will your apps work? Microsoft says Windows on Arm has crossed 7,000 verified apps.

That’s a big jump from a few years ago, but it isn’t the whole story. Windows Latest says its own testing found compatibility “isn’t perfect yet.” If you rely on niche plugins, older games with anti-cheat, or specialty drivers, check them before you buy.

Separately, Microsoft keeps rebuilding ancient Windows 95-era screens in its modern WinUI 3 style. The File Properties dialog (now with dark mode), AutoPlay, Print Management, and the Run box are all getting makeovers. The new Run dialog even opens slightly faster — 94ms versus 103ms. These are still limited to Insider builds, so they may get a mention on stage rather than a release date.

What Probably Won’t Show Up on October 7

Keeping your expectations in check saves you from a disappointing livestream. Here’s what’s unlikely or uncertain.

  • Windows 12: Microsoft said back in May that a new OS version isn’t in the plans.
  • Cheap RTX Spark laptops: every signal points to premium pricing.
  • The Surface RTX Spark Dev Box: a compact developer PC with up to 1 petaflop and 128GB of memory. Windows Latest says it “could also make an appearance,” but that’s not confirmed.

If any of these surprise us on Wednesday, it’ll be big news. Plan for the confirmed stuff and treat the rest as a bonus.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time is the Microsoft October 7 event?

It starts at 10:00 AM Pacific Time on October 7, 2026. That’s 1 PM Eastern, 6 PM in the UK, and 10:30 PM in India.

How can I watch the Microsoft Windows and Surface event?

Microsoft is streaming it free on YouTube. You don’t need an account or a Microsoft login to watch.

Will Microsoft announce Windows 12 on October 7?

No. Microsoft has said a new Windows version isn’t part of its current plans, so the focus is Windows 11 features for AI and Arm PCs.

When can I buy the Surface Laptop Ultra?

Microsoft has only said “later this year.” Pricing and a ship date are expected at the October 7 event, so pre-orders could open the same day.

Will my existing apps run on an RTX Spark laptop?

Most will. Microsoft says over 7,000 apps are verified for Windows on Arm, and Prism emulates many older x86 apps. Niche tools and some anti-cheat games are still the weak spot.

Our Take: Watch the Stream Before You Buy Anything Pricey

If you’re about to spend $1,500 or more on a Windows laptop, hold off until Wednesday evening. Even if the Surface Laptop Ultra ends up too expensive for you, its price will reset what every other RTX Spark machine is worth this fall. And if you mostly browse, write, and stream, you can skip the hype — a current-generation laptop will still serve you well for years.
