Starlink Mobile: Musk Says 2–3 Years, Verizon Says Longer. What It Means for Your Phone

Starlink Mobile, SpaceX’s planned phone service, is still years away, and nobody agrees on how many. Elon Musk says two or three years. Verizon’s CEO says longer. What exists today is a spectrum deal that regulators haven’t approved yet.

Here’s what is confirmed, what is only reported, and what you can actually use on your phone right now.

Quick facts you can skim in ten seconds:

  • SpaceX announced on October 9, 2026 that it will buy nationwide 800 MHz spectrum from Grain Management.
  • The companies haven’t disclosed a price. The Wall Street Journal reported $8 billion in cash, which is unconfirmed.
  • The deal needs FCC approval, and there is no closing date.
  • Musk says the service will take “2 or 3 years.” Verizon CEO Dan Schulman pointed to a longer horizon on October 26.
  • There is no price, plan, or phone list for Starlink Mobile yet.

What is Starlink Mobile, and why are carriers nervous?

Starlink Mobile is SpaceX’s plan to run its own phone network, not just sell satellite internet. The idea is one network that covers cities, rural roads, and dead zones, using satellites plus ground-based spectrum.

SpaceX says it would be the first operator to deploy both satellite and terrestrial spectrum together. It also says the FCC approved its plan for 15,000 next-generation “Gen2” satellites, using 2 GHz spectrum it bought from EchoStar last year.

That’s why carriers noticed. When the spectrum deal broke on October 9, Forbes reported premarket drops of 6.6% for AT&T, 7.2% for Verizon, and 6.8% for T-Mobile. Investors clearly read it as a threat.

In plain terms, today’s satellite texting works as a backup when you have no signal. Starlink Mobile is meant to be a full replacement for your carrier, which is a much bigger promise and a much bigger engineering job.

The spectrum deal: what’s confirmed and what isn’t

Confirmed Reported or unknown
SpaceX agreed to buy 800 MHz spectrum from Grain Management The $8 billion price (Wall Street Journal report only)
FCC approval is required Whether or when the FCC will approve it
Most existing phones support the 800 MHz band, per SpaceX Whether recent iPhones will work with the service
Companies disclosed no financial terms Closing date and Starlink Mobile launch date

Low-band spectrum matters because it travels far and goes through walls. That’s what you’d want for coverage inside buildings and out in the country.

Don’t read the table as a promise. Until the FCC signs off, this is a plan, not a product.

Starlink Mobile launch date: Musk and Verizon disagree

On Verizon’s Q3 earnings call on October 26, CEO Dan Schulman described a horizon of roughly three to six years, according to UNILAD Tech. Musk replied on X that it “will take 2 or 3 years.”

The same report says SpaceX is aiming for a network ready in early 2028. That sits at the optimistic end of both estimates.

Remember who is talking. Schulman runs a company that stands to lose customers, and Musk runs the company that wants them. Neither number is independent. Building towers, signing roaming deals, and clearing the FCC all take time, and a launch that slips by a year or two wouldn’t be unusual for a project this large.

What you can use today instead

You don’t need Starlink Mobile to get satellite help on a phone. All three big US carriers already offer something, though the details differ.

Carrier Satellite partner What it does
T-Mobile Starlink satellites (T-Satellite) Connects compatible phones where regular coverage is missing
Verizon Skylo Satellite messaging and emergency SOS on selected Android phones
AT&T AST SpaceMobile Aims to support calls, messages, and data in remote areas

If you want a free taste of emergency satellite features, our guide on the Pixel 9 Satellite SOS free year covers what that plan includes.

What this means for your phone bill

Probably nothing for a couple of years. There’s no price, no plan, and no device list, so there’s nothing to compare against your current carrier.

The longer-term effect is more likely to show up as pressure. Carriers may push harder on satellite add-ons and pricing as a rival with its own satellites and spectrum gets closer. For more on the company behind it, see our earlier SpaceX Q3 2026 coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will Starlink Mobile launch?

Nobody knows. Musk says two to three years, SpaceX reportedly targets early 2028, and Verizon’s CEO expects it to take longer. No official date exists.

How much will Starlink Mobile cost?

SpaceX hasn’t announced pricing or plans. Any number you see online right now is a guess.

Will my iPhone or Android phone work with it?

SpaceX says most existing devices support the 800 MHz band it’s buying. It hasn’t confirmed which models will work, so wait for a compatibility list.

Can I get Starlink on my phone today?

Yes, through T-Mobile’s T-Satellite on compatible phones. Verizon and AT&T use other satellite partners, not Starlink.

Treat Starlink Mobile as a 2028-or-later maybe, and don’t switch carriers for it. The spectrum deal is real progress, but the FCC decision and the missing price are the two things to watch. If you travel through dead zones, T-Mobile’s satellite service is the only Starlink-powered option you can use now.
