SpaceX AI revenue hit $7.56 billion in the third quarter of 2026. That’s more than Starlink’s $5.25 billion, so the rocket company now earns more from AI than from internet. The company reported results on October 20.
- Total Q3 revenue: $14.57B, up 161% from a year ago.
- AI is about 52% of revenue, but Starlink still makes most of the operating profit.
- Cursor added $608M after its August 14 closing, per TIKR.
- Q4 capital spending is guided at $35B to $40B.
The shift is fast. Q2 AI revenue was about $2.56B, so the unit nearly tripled in one quarter.
Where the SpaceX AI revenue comes from
The unit combines xAI with Cursor, the AI coding tool SpaceX bought this summer. Constellation Research says most revenue comes from Cursor and from renting out computing power as a cloud service.
That second part matters. SpaceX can split its capacity between training its own models and serving paying customers. Here’s how the three segments compare.
| Segment | Q3 2026 revenue | Operating result |
|---|---|---|
| AI (Super Intelligence) | $7.56B | $431M income |
| Connectivity (Starlink) | $5.25B | $2.37B income |
| Space | $1.77B | $7M loss |
AI’s margin is thin at about 5.7%, a figure we calculated from the reported numbers. TIKR notes the AI profit came after $1.2B of Cursor stock compensation.
Why Starlink still matters more for profit
Starlink produced $2.37B of operating income, roughly 85% of the group’s total, according to TIKR. Its gross margin was 55%, including a one-time lift of about 3 points from tariff refunds.
So the headline “AI beats Starlink” is true for sales only. On profit, internet still carries the company.
The compute spending is enormous
AI capital spending was $16.44B in the quarter. Compute capacity ended at 1.7 GW, and the CFO said it should reach 2.2 GW by the end of October and possibly 3 GW by year-end.
Musk said, “We could rent out our compute several times over if we said yes to everyone.” He also expects short-term rental contracts. The CFO said new deployments at current pricing pay back in under a year.
That’s a big bet. If demand cools or chips and power equipment run short, the spending gets harder to justify. Musk himself said turbine casting supply is getting worse.
What the guidance says about demand
TIKR reports a $63B backlog, with about $42B due within a year. SpaceX also guided Q1 2027 revenue to $33B to $37B, against an analyst average near $22.2B.
That’s a bold forecast. It tells you management sees AI demand staying strong, but guidance is a promise, not a result.
What it means for the AI race
Compute is the scarce resource now. We’ve seen the same push elsewhere, like Google and Amazon opening their chip software in our look at TorchTPU and TorchNeuron, and Anthropic’s plans for a Nova Scotia data center.
Net income of $4.4B also got help from other income, including tariff refunds, so don’t read it as pure AI profit. A possible SpaceX and Tesla merger is also still uncertain, per Constellation Research.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much did SpaceX’s AI unit earn in Q3 2026?
It reported $7.56B in revenue and $431M in operating income. That’s about 52% of SpaceX’s total revenue.
Is SpaceX AI bigger than Starlink?
By revenue, yes: $7.56B versus $5.25B. By operating profit, no. Starlink earned $2.37B.
What is Cursor’s role?
Cursor is an AI coding tool that SpaceX acquired, with the deal closing August 14. It added $608M of Q3 revenue.
Does this affect regular users?
Not directly. But more rentable compute could lower costs and widen choice for developers who build AI apps.
My take
The revenue jump is real, but a big part comes from buying Cursor and from heavy spending that hasn’t proven itself yet. I’d watch two numbers next quarter: how much of the compute gets rented to outside customers, and whether capital spending keeps outpacing profit.
