ChatGPT Finances is now free for everyone in the US. Since October 2, Free and Go users can link their bank, card, and investment accounts and ask ChatGPT plain questions about their own money. It can read and explain your finances, but it can’t move a single dollar.
Here’s the short version if you only have ten seconds:
- Rolling out to Free and Go users in the US from October 2, 2026, on web, iOS, and Android.
- Bank and card links run through Plaid, which covers more than 12,000 institutions.
- You can also connect your Experian credit report and VantageScore 3.0 score separately.
- It’s read-only: no payments, transfers, trades, or account changes.
- Disconnect anytime; synced account data is deleted within 30 days.
What ChatGPT Finances Actually Does With Your Money Data
Think of it as a budgeting dashboard with a chat box attached. Once you connect accounts, ChatGPT builds a view of your spending by category, bills, subscriptions, net worth, investments, and portfolio mix.
The useful part is asking follow-up questions in normal language. “Why was September so expensive?” or “Which subscriptions haven’t I used in months?” gets an answer based on your real transactions, not generic advice.
If you connect your credit report, it can also explain your score and flag big changes. OpenAI added that Experian credit feature on September 21, with monthly updates and alerts.
Who Gets It, and When
The feature started small and worked its way down the price tiers over five months. This timeline comes straight from OpenAI’s ChatGPT release notes.
| Date | Who got access | Platforms |
|---|---|---|
| May 15, 2026 | Pro (preview) | Web, iOS |
| June 26, 2026 | Plus (Android added for Plus and Pro) | Web, iOS, Android |
| Sept 21, 2026 | Experian credit report and score for eligible users | Where Finances is available |
| Oct 2, 2026 | Free and Go | Web, iOS, Android |
It’s still US-only. If you’re outside the US, you won’t see the Finances option yet, and OpenAI hasn’t shared dates for other countries.
It’s also a gradual rollout. If a friend has it and you don’t, give it a few days before assuming something’s wrong.
How to Connect Your Bank Account to ChatGPT
Setup takes a few minutes. You never type your bank password into ChatGPT itself, because the login happens inside Plaid’s secure window.
- Open ChatGPT on the web or in the mobile app and look for Finances in the sidebar.
- Tap Get started. At launch, OpenAI also said you could type “@Finances, connect my accounts” in any chat.
- Pick your bank or card issuer in the Plaid window and sign in.
- Choose which accounts to share. You don’t have to link everything.
- Optional: connect your credit report separately. Experian will ask you to verify your identity first.
Tip: start with one checking account and one credit card. You’ll get most of the spending insight without handing over your whole financial life on day one.
What It Can’t Do (and Why That’s a Good Thing)
According to OpenAI’s help page, ChatGPT can’t move money, pay bills, make trades, or change account settings. It also can’t open or close accounts, change retirement contributions, or file your taxes.
That read-only design limits the damage if something goes wrong. A confused answer is annoying; a confused bank transfer would be a disaster. It’s a different approach from agent tools like OpenAI Dots, which are built to take actions for you.
Data isn’t always live, either. Transactions usually refresh within minutes, but delays of several hours can happen, so don’t treat it as your real-time balance.
ChatGPT Finances Privacy: The Settings Worth Checking
Linking your bank to a chatbot is a big step, so it’s worth knowing exactly where your data goes. Here are the controls that matter most:
- Model training: Finances chats follow your normal ChatGPT training setting. If you don’t want your conversations used to improve models, switch that off in Data Controls first.
- Disconnecting: Unlink accounts in Settings, and synced account data is deleted from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days.
- Old chats: Disconnecting doesn’t erase money details you already discussed. Delete those chats yourself.
- Financial memories: You can view and delete them from the Finances page.
- Temporary chats: ChatGPT won’t touch your linked accounts in a temporary chat.
The “old chats” point catches people out. Unlinking feels like a clean break, but your chat history is a separate thing you have to clear.
Also watch for scams. Fake “connect your bank to ChatGPT” emails are an easy phishing hook, so only start setup from inside the app. We covered what to do after a leak in our Revolut data breach guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is ChatGPT Finances free?
Yes. Since October 2, 2026, it’s rolling out to Free and Go users in the US, in addition to Plus and Pro subscribers.
Can ChatGPT access my bank password?
No. You sign in to your bank through Plaid, and ChatGPT receives account data like balances and transactions, not your login details.
Can ChatGPT pay my bills or move money?
No. OpenAI says it can’t move money, pay bills, make trades, or change any account settings. It only reads and explains your data.
Is ChatGPT Finances available outside the US?
Not yet. It’s US-only for now, and OpenAI hasn’t announced dates for other countries.
How do I remove my financial data from ChatGPT?
Disconnect your accounts in Settings, then delete any chats and financial memories that mention your money. Synced data is removed within 30 days.
Should You Link Your Bank to ChatGPT?
If you’ve never kept a budget because spreadsheets bore you, ChatGPT Finances is worth a try, and the free price removes the last excuse. Just be deliberate about it: turn off model training first, link one or two accounts rather than everything, and double-check any big number against your bank app before you act on it. Used as a smart second pair of eyes on your spending, it’s useful. Used as a financial advisor, it isn’t one.
