Chrome Gemini Autofill Now Reads Your Gmail: What It Fills In and How to Turn It Off

Chrome Gemini autofill can now pull details from your Gmail, such as order numbers, tracking info and flight bookings, and drop them straight into web forms. It’s rolling out in the US on desktop, Android and iPhone, and it only works if Gemini in Chrome and Personal Intelligence are turned on. You can switch it off in Chrome settings.

Quick facts, if you’re in a hurry:

  • It adds a “Suggested by Gemini” option to Chrome’s autofill dropdown.
  • It reads Gmail details like order numbers, package tracking and flight bookings.
  • You need Gemini in Chrome with Personal Intelligence enabled.
  • It’s rolling out now in the US on desktop, Android and iOS.
  • You can remove suggestions or disable the feature in Chrome settings.

The feature sounds handy, but it also means Gemini is reading your email. Here’s what that looks like in practice.

How Chrome Gemini autofill works

Think of the last time you filled out a return form and had to hunt through your inbox for an order number. This feature is meant to save you that trip.

According to 9to5Google, Gemini uses Personal Intelligence to find relevant details in Gmail. When it has a match, a “Suggested by Gemini” option shows up in the autofill dropdown. You pick it, and the field fills in.

The feature also appears in Digit’s October 29 roundup of Google’s Android developer event. Both reports describe the same US rollout across desktop, Android and iOS.

How it differs from the autofill you already use

Chrome already fills in addresses and payment cards from your Google Account and Google Wallet. The new feature adds a second layer on top, aimed at the messy details that live in emails instead of your saved profile.

Where it comes from Your Google Account and Google Wallet Your Gmail, read by Gemini

Where you see it Autofill dropdown A “Suggested by Gemini” option in the same dropdown

The key change is the data source. Old autofill used info you saved on purpose. This one digs through email you never meant to “save” anywhere.

The privacy trade-off to think about

Google says sensitive information is encrypted and that you stay in control. You can also remove specific suggestions you don’t want to see.

Those are real controls, but the trade-off is still worth a moment. Because the feature relies on Personal Intelligence, you’re letting Gemini use your account data, and order and flight emails can contain addresses, names and travel plans. If you already worry about AI tools touching your accounts, our piece on how 1Password lets AI log in without seeing your password shows another way to handle that tension.

I couldn’t find Google spelling out how long suggestions are kept or exactly which email types Gemini will scan beyond the examples above. Treat those as open questions for now.

How to turn Chrome Gemini autofill off

Coverage says you can disable the enhanced autofill experience entirely in Chrome Settings, but it doesn’t give the exact menu path. Menu names can differ by device and Chrome version, so check these spots:

  • Open Chrome Settings and look in the autofill options for the enhanced or Gemini-based setting.
  • Check the Gemini in Chrome settings to see whether Personal Intelligence is on.
  • If a suggestion looks wrong or private, remove that one suggestion instead of turning everything off.

Turning off Personal Intelligence is the broader switch, since this feature needs it. If you also manage saved logins, our guide to the Google Password Manager import update covers another recent Chrome-adjacent change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Chrome Gemini autofill available outside the US?

Not yet, based on current reports. It’s rolling out in the US on desktop, Android and iOS, and I haven’t seen a date for other countries.

Does Chrome Gemini autofill work without Personal Intelligence?

No. You need Gemini in Chrome with Personal Intelligence turned on, according to the coverage from 9to5Google and Digit.

What Gmail details can Chrome fill in?

The confirmed examples are order numbers, package tracking information and flight bookings. Google hasn’t published a full list that I could find.

Can I stop Chrome from reading my Gmail for autofill?

Yes. You can disable the enhanced autofill experience in Chrome settings, and you can remove individual suggestions.

Should you switch it on?

If you shop online or book flights a lot, this will probably save you real time, and the “Suggested by Gemini” label at least makes it obvious where each fill came from. If you keep sensitive mail in Gmail and prefer tight control, leave Personal Intelligence off until Google explains retention more clearly. Try it for a week on low-stakes forms, then decide.
