Graphic reading Max 20x is now Claude Ultra, announcing the Claude Ultra plan with no five-hour limit for verified accounts

Claude Ultra Plan Replaces Max 20x: What Changed and What to Check

The Claude Ultra plan is just the new name for Max 20x, the $200-a-month tier. Anthropic also removed the five-hour usage limit for verified Ultra accounts, and the price stayed the same.

Quick facts: here is what matters in ten seconds.

  • Max 20x ($200/month) is now called Ultra. Max 5x ($100/month) is now simply Max.
  • Verified Ultra accounts have no five-hour limit, but the weekly cap still applies.
  • Current subscribers moved over automatically and need to do nothing.
  • Newer accounts keep a temporary limit until Anthropic verifies them.
  • Opus 4.8 fast mode in Claude Code ends on November 30, 2026.

Short list, but a couple of lines hide details worth a closer look.

What the Claude Ultra plan actually changes

Anthropic announced the rename on X on October 30, according to Developers Digest. Some outlets give a slightly different date, so treat the exact day loosely. The prices and the plan tiers themselves did not move.

The real change is the five-hour limit. Before, even $200 subscribers hit a rolling five-hour window. Now verified Ultra accounts skip it and only face the weekly cap.

Anthropic’s account said, per The Next Web, that subscribers don’t need to do anything. Your plan switches names and your billing stays put.

Max vs Ultra: the numbers side by side

This table shows the two paid tiers above Pro, using figures reported by The Next Web and Developers Digest from Anthropic’s pricing page.

Max Ultra
Old name Max 5x Max 20x
Price $100/month (€90 in Europe) $200/month (€180 in Europe)
Usage vs Pro 5x Pro 10x Pro weekly
Five-hour limit Yes No, for verified accounts
Weekly limit Yes Yes
Monthly API credits $100 $200

Both plans also include Fable, Anthropic’s top model, for up to half of the weekly limit, as The Next Web reports.

The 10x question Anthropic hasn’t answered

Look at the table again. The old name promised 20x Pro usage, and the new pricing page says 10x. Anthropic’s announcement didn’t explain that gap, The Next Web notes.

It may be a labeling change, or real capacity may have shifted. Nobody outside Anthropic can say yet. Developers Digest suggests noting your weekly usage before and after the change to see for yourself.

A June lawsuit claimed Anthropic oversold usage on both Max plans, which makes clearer wording a fair thing to ask for.

How to check if your account is verified

Verification decides whether you lose the five-hour limit. Anthropic does it automatically, based on account and payment history, and per Developers Digest, adding a phone number at checkout doesn’t speed it up.

Here is a quick way to check:

  1. Open Settings, then Usage.
  2. Look for a “Current session” bar.
  3. No session bar means your account is verified. If it’s there, you still have a temporary limit.

Unverified accounts get an email once the limit is lifted, according to The Next Web.

One more detail matters if you code with Claude. Usage across claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code draws from a single shared pool, per Developers Digest. A long Claude Code session can therefore eat into the same weekly allowance you use for chat, so the missing five-hour limit helps most when you work in long bursts.

Opus 4.8 fast mode ends November 30

A separate deadline is easy to miss. Claude Code deprecated Opus 4.8 fast mode on October 30 and removes it on November 30, 2026, per the post Developers Digest links. After that, requests error out, so move to Opus 5.5 before the date.

The five-hour limit was also a handy brake on runaway agent runs. If you relied on it, set your own task budgets or stop conditions now.

OpenAI is changing limits too. Our look at ChatGPT and Codex sharing one usage allowance covers that side, and the ChatGPT Pro limit increase shows how fast these numbers keep moving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Claude Ultra plan the same as Max 20x?

Yes. Anthropic’s help article says the Max 20x plan is now called Ultra, at the same $200 a month. Existing subscribers moved over automatically.

Does Ultra really have no usage limit?

No. Only the five-hour limit is gone, and only for verified accounts. The weekly cap still applies, so heavy users can still run out.

Do I need to do anything to switch to Ultra?

No. Anthropic says subscribers have nothing to do. Newer accounts may wait for an email once they are verified.

Does this apply to Teams and Enterprise plans?

No. The rename covers individual plans only, according to Developers Digest. Teams and Enterprise are handled separately.

Did the price go up?

No. Max stays at $100 a month and Ultra at $200 a month, per The Next Web.

Should you pay for Ultra?

If you’re already on Max 20x, nothing changes, so just watch your weekly usage bar for a week. If you’re on Max and hit five-hour walls often, Ultra is now more appealing, but only if your account is verified. I’d wait for Anthropic to explain the 10x label before paying double for it.
