Edge Seamless Updates Could End Browser Restarts, But Not Yet

Microsoft is working on Edge seamless updates, a prototype that would move the browser to a new version without making you restart it. It isn’t released yet, and Microsoft hasn’t given a date. But one related option, restart to update on idle, works today.

Quick Facts

  • Microsoft described the prototype on October 15, 2026, on the Edge developer blog.
  • It is “not in production code or part of Chromium today.”
  • Goal: updates applied within minutes, with your open tabs and forms left alone.
  • Available now: an opt-in idle restart, plus alerts for IT admins.

The short version: nothing changes for you yet, but the direction is clear.

Why Edge update prompts are such a pain

You know the nudge. Edge says it needs a restart, you’re mid-task, and you click “later.” Then you forget for a week.

That delay has a name: the patch gap. It’s the time between a fix being ready and you actually running it. Microsoft says attackers are shrinking their own timelines, partly because of AI, so a week-old browser is a bigger risk than it used to be.

Microsoft’s post points to its 2026 Digital Defense Report for that claim. The company’s answer is to make updating so quiet that you never put it off.

How Edge seamless updates would work

According to the Microsoft Edge Blog, the prototype works in three steps.

  1. The new version downloads in the background.
  2. The browser and its supporting processes switch over while your work is preserved.
  3. Open tabs move to the new version, either right away or after your next navigation.

Tabs only stay put when the old and new versions are compatible. Otherwise they pick up the new version the next time you load a page. Microsoft’s demo kept a half-filled web form intact through the switch.

One caveat from gHacks: the demo still began with a click on the Update button. Microsoft says the end goal is no click at all. There’s no flag or setting you can turn on today.

What you can use today: restart to update on idle

Microsoft’s current answer is a setting that used to be called Instant Updates. It’s now “restart to update on idle.”

When your PC is idle, Edge relaunches, applies the pending update, and restores your tabs. It’s still a restart, but it happens while you’re away from the keyboard. Microsoft says this can get protection to you “in hours instead of days” if you tend to delay updates.

It’s opt-in, so nothing happens unless you switch it on. The trade-off is simple: you give up control over exactly when Edge relaunches, and in return you stop running an outdated browser for days. For most people, that’s a good swap.

Microsoft’s support article “Automatically update Microsoft Edge when your device is idle” covers the exact steps.

What IT admins get right now

Managed Windows PCs get Security Update Alerts through the Monitoring dashboard in the Edge management service. There’s no extra licensing cost.

Admins pick a minimum severity level, then get dashboard and email alerts when a release meets it. That includes releases that fix zero-day bugs. The dashboard lists the CVEs addressed and how many managed devices may still need the update.

Microsoft also says it has shipped Edge patches outside Chromium’s usual schedule when protection couldn’t wait.

Edge update options compared

Here’s how the three pieces line up, so you can see what’s real and what isn’t.

Feature Status today Needs a restart? Who gets it
Edge seamless updates Early prototype, not in production No (goal) No release date
Restart to update on idle Available now, opt-in Yes, while you’re idle Anyone using Edge
Security Update Alerts Available now Not applicable Admins of managed Windows PCs

This matters because only the last two rows help you today. The first is a promise.

If you follow browser news, this fits a wider push. We covered a similar security push in Chrome’s new Enhanced Protection warnings, and Edge also has a performance angle, as in how Windows 11 faster app launches begin with Edge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I turn on Edge seamless updates now?

No. It’s a prototype that isn’t in production Edge or Chromium, and Microsoft hasn’t named a flag, channel, or date.

Will Edge still restart when it updates?

Today, yes. The idle option restarts Edge when you’re not using the PC and restores your tabs. Seamless updates aim to remove the restart entirely.

Is restart to update on idle on by default?

No, it’s opt-in. You need to turn it on in Edge’s settings or have your admin configure it.

Does this affect Chrome or other browsers?

Not directly. Microsoft says the prototype isn’t part of Chromium, so Chrome doesn’t get it unless Google builds something similar.

Our take

Turn on idle restart now if you’re someone who ignores update prompts. It’s the one thing here that closes the patch gap today. Treat seamless updates as a nice maybe: browser updates that switch over live are hard to get right, and a prototype is a long way from shipping. Until then, don’t wait on it.
