Gemini in Android Auto gets Personal Intelligence, shown with a Gemini star over a night road

Gemini in Android Auto Now Reads Your Flights, Photos and Plans

Gemini in Android Auto just got a lot more useful. Google started rolling out Personal Intelligence to Android Auto on October 20, so you can ask about your flight gate, a saved restaurant or an appointment without touching your phone. It only works if you opt in.

Here is the short version before we get into the details:

  • Rolling out now on Android Auto; cars with Google built-in follow “in the coming months.”
  • Works with Gmail, Calendar, Google Photos, Maps, YouTube and Search.
  • For personal Google accounts, ages 18 and up. Work and school accounts are out.
  • Not available in the EEA, Switzerland, the UK or Nigeria.
  • Off until you turn it on, and you can switch it off at any time.

If you only skim, that list is the whole story. The rest explains what it does and who it leaves out.

What Gemini in Android Auto can do with your data

Until now, Gemini in the car could handle navigation, music, calls and general questions. Personal Intelligence adds your own information on top. It can pull a specific email, photo or saved place, then combine them in one answer.

Google’s own examples show the idea. You can ask for your flight gate and whether the flight is on time, in a single question. You can ask for a restaurant that fits what you usually like. You can even say “take me to the car wash” after snapping a photo of it, or get directions to a doctor’s appointment without knowing the address.

According to TechCrunch, the assistant might also warn you about a delayed flight while you are driving to the airport. That is the real appeal: it works out what you need before you have to dig through apps.

How to turn on Personal Intelligence in the car

Nothing is connected by default. Google says apps stay unlinked until you opt in through your Gemini settings, where you also pick which apps Gemini can reach.

If you already enabled Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app on your phone, the setting carries over to the car. You do not need to set it up twice. Turning it off works the same way, from Gemini settings.

Google’s announcement says the rollout is gradual, so the option may not show up on your phone today. If you do not see it, check again in a few days after updating the Google and Gemini apps.

Who does not get it yet

The limits are bigger than the headline suggests. Personal Intelligence is for personal Google accounts held by users 18 or older. Workspace business, enterprise and education accounts are excluded.

It is also available globally except the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Nigeria. If you live in one of those regions, you will keep the standard Gemini experience for now.

Google does not say anything about a paid subscription tier or language limits in its announcement, so treat those as unknown rather than assuming either way.

Android Auto vs Google built-in: what is different

The two setups get the feature at different times, and they handle your data a little differently. This table covers the main points.

Android Auto Cars with Google built-in
Availability Rolling out from October 20 “In the coming months”
Where it runs On your phone, shown on the car screen Built into the car itself
Opt-in required Yes, in Gemini settings Yes, in Gemini settings
Data privacy note You choose which apps connect Personal answers only when you are in the car with your phone connected

The takeaway: if your car runs Android Auto through your phone, you can try this first. Owners of built-in systems, such as the GM models that got Gemini earlier this year, are waiting on a later update.

Is it safe to let your car read your Gmail?

That depends on how much you trust the setup. Google says privacy is built in and you stay in control of which apps Gemini can use. TechCrunch notes that this level of access could make some drivers uneasy.

A sensible middle path is to connect only what you need, such as Calendar and Maps, and leave Gmail and Photos off. For background on how Google plans to use this data elsewhere, see our post on what the Personal Intelligence ads policy means for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Gemini in Android Auto work without Personal Intelligence?

Yes. Navigation, music, calls and general questions still work. The answers just are not tailored to you.

Is Personal Intelligence free?

Google’s announcement does not mention a subscription requirement. Check your Gemini settings to see whether the option appears for your account.

Can I use it with a work or school Google account?

No. It is limited to personal accounts for users 18 and older, and Workspace business, enterprise and education accounts are excluded.

When will it reach cars with Google built-in?

Google only says “in the coming months.” No exact date has been given.

Should you turn it on?

If you spend real time in the car and your calendar and email are tidy, yes, try it with just Calendar and Maps connected. The flight and appointment questions are the ones that save time. I would hold off on connecting Gmail and Photos until you have seen how it behaves, since you can always add them later. And if you are in the UK or EU, there is nothing to decide yet.
