The Gemini Windows app is out, and it’s free to download for Windows 10 and 11. Press Alt+Space and Gemini opens over whatever you’re working on. A few of the best features, though, need a paid Google AI plan.
Quick facts, so you can decide in ten seconds whether it’s worth installing:
- Launched: September 10, 2026, worldwide
- Works on: Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Shortcut: Alt+Space by default, and you can change it
- Price: free app, but Gemini Spark and Gemini Omni need a Google AI subscription
- Download: gemini.google/desktop
The list above covers the basics. The rest of this post covers the parts Google’s announcement glosses over.
How the Gemini Windows app works
This is a standalone Gemini desktop app, not a browser tab. Per Google’s launch post, the Alt+Space shortcut opens Gemini as an overlay, so you can fact-check a paragraph or brainstorm slide titles without switching windows.
There’s also a full workspace for longer jobs. You can hand multi-step tasks to Gemini Spark, which Google describes as a 24/7 AI agent, or ask Gemini to draft a project summary from your Gmail and Google Drive content. It can also make images with Nano Banana and videos with Gemini Omni.
If you already use Gemini at work, it’s worth a look at our guide to the Gemini Agent for Google Workspace. Spark and that agent overlap in what they try to do.
Google also calls the app lightweight and quiet, saying it won’t slow your PC down. That’s Google’s claim, so test it on an older machine before you trust it. And Android Authority saw no difference in image and video results compared with the browser version.
How to get the Gemini desktop app set up
Setup takes a couple of minutes. Follow these steps:
- Go to gemini.google/desktop and download the Windows installer.
- Install the app and open it.
- Press Alt+Space to confirm the overlay appears.
- If another tool grabs that shortcut, change it in the Gemini app settings.
Google calls the shortcut customizable, so you aren’t stuck with Alt+Space. Step four matters more than it looks, as the next section explains.
The Alt+Space shortcut may collide with other apps
Alt+Space is a busy key combo on Windows. According to explainx.ai, Microsoft Copilot, PowerToys Run and Google’s own Google app for Windows (a Labs search launcher) can all use it too.
Google hasn’t said what happens when several are installed at once, and we haven’t confirmed the conflicts ourselves. If Alt+Space does nothing or opens the wrong tool, remap one of them.
Microsoft is also pushing assistants deeper into the OS. Our explainer on Windows Hybrid Intelligence shows where that’s heading.
What’s free in the Gemini Windows app and what costs money
Google’s wording is vague, so this table separates what’s confirmed from what isn’t:
| Feature | What it does | Paid plan needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Alt+Space overlay | Quick questions over any window | Basic Gemini is free, per Android Authority |
| Gemini Spark | Hands off multi-step tasks to an agent | Yes, per Google |
| Gemini Omni | Video creation | Yes, per Google |
| Nano Banana | Image generation | Google doesn’t say |
| Gmail and Drive | Draft summaries from your own content | Google doesn’t say |
Google’s footnote also says availability varies and that you must be 18 or older. Check the app itself before you count on a feature.
What’s still missing compared with the Mac app
Google released a Mac version in spring 2026. Android Authority reports that the Mac client got local file access for Spark in July, while the Windows version was still waiting.
That gap matters if you wanted Spark to work on files stored on your PC. Android Authority says it “should be arriving soon,” but there’s no date. Google only says more native desktop abilities will roll out over time.
Also, the app runs in Google’s cloud, not on your own hardware. Meta is working on an on-PC agent too, which we covered in Muse for Windows.
Who will get the most out of the Gemini desktop app
Writers, students and anyone who juggles a lot of documents will notice the overlay first. You stay in your document, ask a quick question, and go back to typing. That small saving adds up over a workday.
Heavy Gmail and Drive users get a second perk, since the workspace can pull from those accounts to draft summaries. If you rarely use Google’s services, the app has less to offer, and a browser tab may be enough.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Gemini Windows app free?
The app is free to download and basic Gemini works without paying. Gemini Spark and Gemini Omni need a Google AI subscription.
Does it work on Windows 10?
Yes. Google lists both Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported.
Can I change the Alt+Space shortcut?
Yes. Google calls it a customizable shortcut, and you change it in the Gemini app settings.
Can Gemini open files on my PC yet?
Not for Spark. Android Authority says local file access on Windows was still pending at launch.
Should you install it?
If you live in Google’s apps, yes. The overlay alone saves a lot of tab-switching, and it costs nothing to try. Wait on the paid features until Google says what Spark can actually do with your local files, and if Alt+Space is already taken on your PC, remap one of the apps on day one.
