Google AI Mode Links Move Higher: What Changes for Searchers and Publishers

Google AI Mode links are about to get much harder to miss. Google says it is moving source links higher in AI Mode and AI Overviews, so you can reach the original websites faster. The change was reported on 9to5Google on October 15, 2026.

Here is the short version before we get into the details.

  • Announced and reported on October 15, 2026
  • Affects AI Mode and AI Overviews in Google Search
  • Inline links appear higher and more often in answers
  • No exact rollout dates or country list from Google yet
  • Google has not shared click data for the new layout

If you use Google Search for research, shopping or troubleshooting, you will notice this first in how answers look.

What changes in Google AI Mode links

Until now, the sources behind an AI answer often sat in a small spot you had to hunt for. Publishers complained that readers read the summary and never visited the site that did the work.

Google now puts inline links inside the text of the answer itself. They show up higher in the response and more often, which makes them easier to tap while you read.

According to Search Engine Land, Google describes the goal as making key sources easily clickable.

For you, that means fewer extra taps to check where a claim came from. For site owners, it could mean a bit of the traffic that AI answers absorbed finds its way back.

A new “official site” box at the top of answers

Some questions only have one or two real answers on the web. Think of a government form, a bank login help page or a product support article.

Google is testing a section at the top of the AI response for exactly those cases. Each link gets a short line explaining why it is useful. Since this is still a test, you may not see it yet.

The idea is to send people to the real source first. It could also help with look-alike pages that rank well but are not the site you need.

Dive Deeper, carousels and creator profiles

Link placement is only part of the update. Google is also reshaping the extras around the answer, and the table below shows what each piece does.

Feature What it does Status
Inline links Links sit inside the answer text, higher and more often Rolling out, no dates given
Dive Deeper section Related articles get thumbnails and a more clickable layout Rolling out, no dates given
Article carousels Highlights preferred sources for timely topics Expanding to more places and languages
Top-of-answer box Shows the one or two official sites for a task, with a reason Test
Creator profile links Creator names in AI Mode video results open a Search profile Test

Google also says Preferred Sources use has grown 7x since launch. That setting lets you pick the news sites you want to see more of in Search.

Will publishers actually get more clicks?

Nobody knows yet. Google has not released click data for the new layout, and its AI reports in Search Console still don’t break that out, as Search Engine Land points out.

Search Engine Land’s Barry Schwartz is also not convinced the changes will help publishers the way Google claims. That is his opinion, not measured data.

There are also things Google has not said. It has not named the countries or languages for each feature, and it has not said how many queries will get the top box. Until it does, treat the rollout as gradual and uneven.

How to use the new layout today

You don’t need to change settings to see the links, but a few habits help you get more out of them.

  • Tap the inline link inside a sentence when the claim matters, such as a price, a date or a security fix.
  • Add your favorite news sites as Preferred Sources so carousels lean toward them.
  • Check the official-site box, if you get it, before trusting a random result for forms or account help.

These steps take seconds and cut down on acting on an AI summary that got a detail wrong. If you also browse with AI tools, our guide to Gemini in Chrome for Android shows how Google is pushing AI deeper into the browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Google has not given exact dates. Article carousels are rolling out now to more places and languages, while the top-of-answer box and creator links are tests.

Does this apply to AI Overviews too?

Yes. Google says the link changes cover both AI Mode and AI Overviews in Search.

What are Preferred Sources in Google Search?

It is a setting that lets you choose the news sites you want to see more of. Google says usage is up 7x this year.

Can I see how many people click these links?

Not yet. Site owners say Search Console’s AI reports don’t split out clicks from these new link spots.

Our take

This is a good move for readers and a fair first step for publishers, but the proof is in the clicks. If you run a site, watch your referral traffic over the next few weeks instead of trusting the announcement. If you are a searcher, get in the habit of opening the source for anything you will act on.
