Perplexity Teammates Are Always-On AI Agents, but the $200 Max Plan Is the Catch

Perplexity Teammates are always-on AI agents that keep working on a job after you close the tab, and right now only the $200-a-month Max plan gets them. If you wanted a cheap way to try an AI “coworker,” this isn’t it yet.

Perplexity announced the feature on November 4, 2026, as a research preview on the web, according to i-SCOOP.

Here are the quick facts before we get into the details:

  • Launched as a research preview on the web only. Mobile is “coming soon,” with no dates.
  • Needs the Max plan at $200 a month or $2,000 a year.
  • Each Teammate keeps a standing role, memory and task history between jobs.
  • It can work in Slack, GitHub and Gmail if you connect them.

The big question is whether an always-on agent is worth that price, so the rest of this post covers what it does, what it costs and what you control.

What a Perplexity Teammate does that a normal chat doesn’t

A regular AI chat answers and stops. A Teammate keeps going. You give it a name, a role and a set of connected tools, then assign it to a project.

It plans the work, can start extra agents, checks the results and hands finished work back for your review. Goals, task history and shared files carry over between assignments.

It is built on Perplexity Computer, so it uses the same Projects, skills and memory. The difference is that Computer stops when a task is done, while a Teammate keeps watching your connected tools until you switch it off, per i-SCOOP.

Sample roles include bug triage, pipeline tracking and market research. Free Press Journal also mentions running ad campaigns and acting as an on-call engineer who opens fix requests.

Perplexity Teammates price: the $200 plan and the credit math

The Max plan is the entry ticket, but credits decide how far it stretches. Here are the numbers reported by i-SCOOP.

Item What’s reported
Plan required Max: $200 a month or $2,000 a year
Monthly credits 10,000, which expire on your billing date
Sign-up bonus 35,000 credits, one time, expiring after about 30 days
Credit value 100 credits equal $1
Default spending cap $200 a month, adjustable up to $5,000
If credits run out Running tasks pause and new credit-using tasks don’t start

Perplexity’s own reference ranges put a quick fact at 15 to 70 credits and a multi-step research report at 350 to 950. By our math, 10,000 credits covers roughly 10 to 28 research reports a month.

Perplexity hasn’t published typical credit use for Teammates specifically. For now, Max subscribers get a promotional free-usage period, and then credits apply.

What you control, and what to lock down first

Each Teammate runs on its own computer with its own browser, cookies and sessions. You can follow its thread, take over the desktop or redirect it mid-task.

It only gets the permissions you give it. For GitHub, you pick the repositories. For Slack, you choose the workspace, the channels, what it monitors and when it may report. Saved credentials are encrypted, and the Teammate can’t read them directly, according to the Help Center as cited by i-SCOOP.

Start with one narrow job and one channel. An agent that acts on its own is only as safe as the access you hand it, which is the same lesson from our look at AI agents that raised their own spending limit in a Cornell study.

If you want agents to log in without ever seeing your password, see how 1Password for Agents approaches it. Also keep the spending cap low until you know how fast credits drain.

One more thing: colleagues can assign work to a Teammate in a monitored Slack channel, but only the owner can see its chat. Shared chats are read-only for everyone else.

How it compares with OpenAI Dots and Claude Duet

Perplexity isn’t alone here. Free Press Journal lists two rivals that launched in the past six weeks.

Product Launched Who can use it Notable detail
Perplexity Teammates Nov 4, 2026 (research preview) Max subscribers, web only Persistent role, Slack follow-ups
OpenAI Dots Sept 29 Pro and Business Premium, eligible markets Own cloud computer, 4,000+ apps via plugins
Claude Duet Oct 21 (some outlets say Oct 22) US Claude Pro and Max, waitlist Checks accounts every few hours, not continuously

These details come from Free Press Journal, which relies on company statements and other outlets. Treat the feature claims as vendor descriptions until independent testers weigh in.

Teammates’ default model is Claude Opus 5.5, though you can pick a different one for each Teammate, per i-SCOOP.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Perplexity Teammates on the Pro plan?

No. You need Max, so Pro subscribers have to upgrade. Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max don’t include Teammates by default, so ask your admin.

Does Perplexity Teammates work on iPhone or Android?

Not yet. It’s web only for now. Mobile and desktop versions are “coming soon,” and Perplexity hasn’t given dates.

What happens when my credits run out?

Tasks that are already running pause, and new tasks that need credits won’t start. You can raise the spending cap, which defaults to $200 a month.

Is it available in Europe?

Perplexity hasn’t published a country list. If your account has Max, Teammates should show up in the sidebar. i-SCOOP notes there’s no EU data residency, so check your data-protection needs first.

Is it worth paying for?

For most people, not yet. A $200 plan, a credit meter you can’t predict and a web-only preview add up to something best suited to a team with a clear, repeatable job like on-call triage or weekly research. If that’s you, try one Teammate with a tight cap and see what a month of credits actually buys. Everyone else can wait for mobile, real usage numbers and independent reviews.
