Pixel 6 End of Support Is Here: What to Do Before Patches Stop

The Pixel 6 end of support is almost here. Google’s five-year update promise for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro runs out this October, so your phone is about to stop getting new security patches. It won’t stop working, but it will slowly become riskier to use.

Here’s the short version, so you can decide quickly.

Quick facts:

  • Affected phones: Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, which launched in October 2021.
  • Support window: five years of OS and security updates from the Google Store launch date.
  • Pixel 6a is not affected yet. One report puts its end date in July 2027.
  • After support ends, the phone keeps working, but security fixes stop.

The exact cutoff depends on each phone’s Google Store launch date, so check Google’s own support page for yours.

Pixel 6 end of support: what Google actually promised

When the Pixel 6 launched, Google promised three years of Android updates and five years of security patches. In late 2024, it extended OS coverage by two more years for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 families, according to NeoTeo.

Google’s Pixel update page says these phones get five years of OS and security updates from their Google Store launch. That puts the end in October 2026 for the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro.

Patches have not been monthly lately. As Gadget Hacks notes, older Tensor Pixels seem to be on a less regular, often quarterly pattern. We covered a related quirk in our Pixel 11 security patch gap post.

What stops, and what keeps working

Think of it as the safety net coming down, not the phone switching off. Your apps, camera and calls carry on as normal.

Here is what you lose and what you keep:

Feature After support ends
Monthly or quarterly security patches Stop
New Android quarterly releases Stop (Android 17 QPR1 is the last for these models)
Pixel Drops with new features Stop
Google Play System Updates May still arrive for some components
Apps from Google Play Keep working while developers support your Android version

The Play System Updates row is the only bright spot. It can patch a few core parts of Android, but it can’t replace a full security patch.

Is it safe to keep using a Pixel 6?

For a while, yes. Unpatched phones don’t get hacked the day support ends. The risk grows month by month as new flaws are found and never fixed on your phone.

Your habits matter more than the date. If you only use trusted apps, keep Play Protect on and avoid sideloading, the risk stays fairly low. If you do banking, work email or two-factor codes on the phone, an unpatched device is a weaker place to keep them.

New Android versions are moving on too. Newer builds like those in our Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 guide won’t come to your phone.

Your options: keep it, trade it in, or move on

You have three sensible paths. This table compares them side by side.

Option Cost Best for Catch
Keep using it Free Light use, a backup phone No new security fixes
Trade in or sell it Low Putting money toward a newer phone Value drops as support ends
Buy a newer Pixel or other phone Higher Daily driver, banking, work Upfront cost
Install a custom ROM Free Tinkerers Can break banking apps and voids safety checks

If you plan to trade in, do it soon. Trade-in offers tend to shrink once a model is officially out of support.

Three quick steps to take before the last update

A little prep now saves trouble later, whichever option you pick.

  • Open Settings, then About phone, and note your Android security patch level.
  • Install every pending system and Play update, so you land on the final version.
  • Back up photos, contacts and app data to your Google account before any trade-in or reset.

Doing these in order means you leave the phone on its safest possible software and keep your data either way.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does Pixel 6 support end?

October 2026, based on Google’s five-year promise from the Google Store launch date. Check Google’s support page for the exact date on your model.

Will my Pixel 6 stop working after support ends?

No. It keeps working with its current software. You just stop getting new security patches and features.

Does this affect the Pixel 6a?

Not yet. One report says the 6a is covered until July 2027, but treat that as a guide and confirm it on Google’s page.

Can I still use banking apps on an unsupported Pixel?

Usually yes, for now. Some apps may eventually require a newer Android version or a recent security patch.

The bottom line for Pixel 6 owners

If the Pixel 6 is your only phone and you use it for money or work, plan to replace it within the next few months. If it’s a spare or a light-use phone, keep it and stay careful about what you install. Either way, don’t wait for a scare to make the call.
