Pixel October 2026 Update: What’s Fixed and Why You Should Install It

The Pixel October 2026 update is rolling out now, and it’s a patch-and-fix release rather than a feature drop. It brings the 2026-10-05 security patch level and three bug fixes to Pixel phones running Android 17. If you want your phone safe and stable, install it this week.

Here are the quick facts:

  • Rollout started around October 6, 2026, following the September QPR1 release.
  • It covers Pixel phones from the Pixel 6 series up to the Pixel 11 series, plus the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold.
  • It fixes 28 Android security issues and adds 6 Pixel-specific patches.
  • There are no new features, according to 9to5Google.

What the Pixel October 2026 update actually fixes

Google lists three user-facing fixes. Each one hits a different group of phones, so you may not notice any of them on your device.

Bug fixed What you’d see Phones affected
Missing keyboard The on-screen keyboard sometimes fails to appear in search fields Pixel 8 and newer
Call audio Ringtones can sound noisy or distorted during some VoIP calls Pixel 8 through Pixel 10a
Wrong orientation Photos and videos save rotated the wrong way Pixel 11 series only

The keyboard bug is the one most people will have run into. If you’ve ever tapped a search bar and got nothing, this is likely the cure.

The security patches: what Google closed

Google’s Pixel Update Bulletin lists six extra fixes beyond the standard Android patch. Four are in Pixel components and two are in the kernel.

Three of the Pixel items are rated Critical. Here they are:

  • CVE-2026-55330, a Bluetooth elevation-of-privilege flaw.
  • CVE-2026-56952, an elevation-of-privilege flaw in the GDMC component.
  • CVE-2026-55307, an information-disclosure flaw in GSA.

The standard Android side of the patch adds 28 more fixes, bringing the total to 34 security issues. Google also notes that Pixel phones can receive patches beyond the ones in the main Android bulletin.

The bulletin doesn’t say any of these are being exploited. Still, Critical Bluetooth bugs are the kind you want patched before you walk into a busy café or airport.

Which Pixel phones get it, and which build to look for

The build number tells you whether you’re up to date. Compare yours in Settings, About phone, Android version.

Phones Build number
Pixel 6 to 7a, Pixel Tablet, Pixel Fold CP3A.261005.002.A1
Pixel 8 to Pixel 10a CP3A.261005.005
Pixel 11 series CD1A.261005.003
Softbank Pixel 11 series CD1A.261005.003.B1

One quirk: Pixel 11 owners get a different build family from older phones, so don’t panic if your number looks nothing like your friend’s Pixel 9. Each family is its own track, and all of them carry the same October security work.

If your build ends in a later date, you’re already ahead of this release. Nothing to do.

Pixel 6 owners: this may be your last update

Beebom reports that the October patch could be the final one for the Pixel 6 series. Google left those phones out of the Android 17 QPR2 beta because they’ve passed their update promise.

That’s a report, not an official announcement, so watch Google’s own channels. We covered your options in our guide on what to do when a Pixel 6 stops getting updates.

How to install the update today

The rollout is phased, so your phone may not have pinged you yet. You can ask for it manually:

  1. Open Settings and tap System.
  2. Tap Software updates, then System update.
  3. Tap Check for update and let it download.
  4. Restart when prompted.

Plug in your charger and use Wi-Fi first. If you’ve had odd network behavior since moving to Android 17, our post on the Pixel connectivity diagnostics in Android 17 is worth a read.

Why a small Android 17 update is still worth your time

It’s easy to ignore a Pixel security update that adds nothing you can see. But patches like these close doors that attackers walk through, often without any sign on your screen.

Phones also hold more of your life than ever: banking apps, work email, photos, two-factor codes. One unpatched flaw in a radio like Bluetooth is a small risk, but it’s a risk you can remove in a few taps.

There’s a practical side too. Bug fixes like the missing keyboard are the sort of thing that make a phone feel flaky, and flaky phones get blamed on age. Often a monthly patch is all it needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Pixel October 2026 update add new features?

No. 9to5Google says the release covers only security fixes and three bug fixes. Bigger features are expected in later releases, such as the Android 17 QPR2 beta.

Is it safe to install right away?

Security patches are generally worth installing quickly. Back up your phone first if you want extra peace of mind, since that’s good practice before any update.

Why don’t I see the update yet?

Google releases Pixel updates in waves, so it can take days to reach every phone. Tap Check for update in System update to nudge it.

What is the security patch level for October 2026?

Google’s Pixel bulletin sets it at 2026-10-05. A phone at that level or later has all the fixes in the bulletin.

Our take: install it, then move on

This isn’t an exciting update, and that’s fine. A fixed keyboard, cleaner call audio and Critical Bluetooth patches are worth two minutes of your time. Install it tonight, restart, and forget about it.
