Surface RTX Spark Dev Box Costs $5,999: What You Get and Who It’s For

The Surface RTX Spark Dev Box is Microsoft’s new $5,999.99 mini desktop for developers who want to run big AI models on their own desk instead of in the cloud. Pre-orders opened on October 7, 2026, and it comes with Windows 11 Pro and a full set of coding tools already installed.

Here are the facts most people ask about first.

  • Price: from $5,999.99 in the US, with the monitor and keyboard sold separately.
  • Memory: 128GB of unified memory shared by the CPU and GPU.
  • Status: pre-order only. Microsoft’s page lists no ship date.
  • Software: Windows 11 Pro with VS Code, GitHub Copilot, WSL and PowerShell 7.

Those numbers come from Microsoft’s own product page, so treat the performance claims as marketing until reviewers get a unit.

What this tiny Windows box is really for

Think of it as a workstation for people building AI agents and local coding tools. Microsoft says it can run coding models of up to 120B parameters locally, which is the kind of size that normally needs a rack of servers or a big cloud bill.

It uses Nvidia’s RTX Spark chip, the same silicon behind the Surface Laptop Ultra that Microsoft showed at its October 7 event. We covered what to expect from that event in our Microsoft October 7 event preview, and the chip’s background in our RTX Spark release date and price post.

The pitch is simple: keep your code and data on your own machine, and only send work to the cloud when you choose to. GitHub Copilot’s routing can offload up to 20% of workloads to cloud models, according to Microsoft.

Surface RTX Spark Dev Box specs, and what Microsoft left out

Microsoft listed the headline specs but skipped a few basics. This table shows what is confirmed on its product page and what is missing.

Spec What Microsoft says
GPU Nvidia RTX GPU, up to 1 petaflop of AI compute
Memory 128GB unified memory
Power and cooling 100W thermal envelope; aluminum body acts as the heatsink
Ports 2 USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, Ethernet, headphone jack
OS Windows 11 Pro, secured-core PC
CPU cores, storage, size Not listed on the product page we checked

That petaflop figure sounds huge, but it is a theoretical peak. According to Unite.AI, it refers to FP4 math with sparsity, which is not the same as day-to-day speed. Wait for real benchmarks before you plan around it.

Surface RTX Spark Dev Box vs. the Surface Laptop Ultra

Both machines share the same chip family, so the choice mostly comes down to how you work. Here is how they compare on the details that have been confirmed.

Dev Box Laptop Ultra
Starting price $5,999.99 $2,599
Form factor Compact desktop 15-inch laptop, under 4.5 lbs
Memory 128GB unified Up to 128GB unified
Availability Pre-order, no date on Microsoft’s page Pre-orders open, ships October 16
Monitor and keyboard Sold separately Built in

Laptop details come from Engadget’s event roundup. The Dev Box costs more than twice as much as the laptop, so you are paying for a bigger thermal budget and a permanent desk setup.

Local AI on the Dev Box: what to believe so far

The software side is where Microsoft is trying to win developers. The box ships with VS Code, GitHub Copilot in the CLI and Windows Terminal, WSL, PowerShell 7, and a new Intelligent Terminal for AI-assisted debugging.

It also includes Windows ML with Nvidia’s TensorRT-RTX support. If you already use Linux tools on Windows, our guide to WSL containers on Windows 11 shows how that side of the workflow works.

The catch is that the 120B-parameter and 20% routing claims are Microsoft’s own. Nobody outside the company has tested them yet. Also, how much of the 128GB the GPU can actually use will depend on your setup and workload.

Who should pre-order, and who should wait

This is a niche machine, and Microsoft says so by aiming it at developers building local AI and agent apps. A few groups stand to get real value from it.

  • Teams that cannot send source code or customer data to a cloud AI service.
  • Developers who fine-tune or test large models and are tired of paying for rented GPUs.
  • Makers who want a compact desktop instead of a tower.

Everyone else is better off waiting. The Surface Laptop Ultra costs less than half as much and ships sooner, and other makers are lining up their own RTX Spark desktops. According to the Unite.AI report, Nvidia says ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo and MSI plan compact models this fall.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box cost?

It starts at $5,999.99 in the US. The external monitor and keyboard are sold separately, so your total will be higher.

When does the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box ship?

Microsoft’s product page gives no ship date. Unite.AI reports that shipments begin in November, but that has not been confirmed on the page we checked.

Can it run AI models without the internet?

Microsoft says it can run coding models of up to 120B parameters locally. Independent testing has not confirmed that yet.

Is the Dev Box better than the Surface Laptop Ultra?

Not by default. They use the same chip family, but the laptop is far cheaper and has a screen and keyboard built in. The Dev Box suits a fixed desk setup with heavier workloads.

Our verdict: wait for the benchmarks

Unless a locked-down AI project is on your calendar this quarter, skip the pre-order. A $6,000 box with no confirmed ship date, no listed storage size and no outside benchmarks is a lot to take on trust. If local AI matters to you, watch for reviews in November and compare them against the cheaper Laptop Ultra before you commit.
