File Explorer Preview Is Back for Downloaded Files in Windows 11

The File Explorer preview for downloaded files works again in Windows 11. Microsoft’s October 2026 update lets the Preview pane show PDFs and other non-HTML files right away, and HTML files now need one extra click.

If you lost previews a year ago and have been right-clicking “Unblock” on every file since, you can stop.

Here are the facts you need before we get into the details.

  • Ships in the mandatory October 13, 2026 security update (KB5127648 and KB5126653).
  • Covers Windows 11 versions 26H2, 25H2, 24H2 and 23H2.
  • PDFs and other non-HTML downloads preview automatically.
  • HTML downloads stay blocked until you click “Preview anyway.”
  • Was first tested in the optional KB5124010 preview in September.

In short: less friction for everyday files, and the safety net stays in place for the risky one.

Why File Explorer preview stopped working on downloads

Microsoft turned off the File Explorer preview for any file carrying the Mark of the Web, the hidden tag Windows adds to files that come from the internet. According to IT-Connect, that change landed with the October 14, 2025 security updates.

The reason was a security hole. Microsoft said an HTML file with tags pointing to an external path could leak your NTLM hash, a kind of password fingerprint, just by being previewed. You never had to open the file.

The fix worked, but it was blunt. Every downloaded file lost its preview, including harmless PDFs, and you had to open Properties and tick “Unblock” one file at a time.

What changed in the October 2026 update

Microsoft now treats file types differently instead of blocking everything. BleepingComputer reports that HTML files show a warning with a “Preview anyway” button, while non-HTML files such as PDFs preview on their own.

This table shows how the behavior compares.

Downloaded file Since October 2025 With the October 2026 update
PDF and other non-HTML files No preview until you unblock the file Previews automatically
HTML files No preview until you unblock the file Warning first, then “Preview anyway”
Per-file unblocking Needed for every file No longer needed for previews

The same update adds Emoji 17.0, an “Open apps maximized” accessibility setting, and a Copilot key remap. We covered that last one in our guide to remapping the Copilot key in Windows 11.

How to use the File Explorer preview on a blocked HTML file

You only need this for HTML files. Everything else should just work once you are on the new update.

Open File Explorer, press Alt + P to turn on the Preview pane, and select the downloaded HTML file. Read the warning, then click “Preview anyway” only if you trust the source.

If you do not know where the file came from, skip it. Opening it in a browser sandbox or a text editor is safer than previewing it.

Who gets it and how to install it

The change is part of the October Patch Tuesday release, so it arrives through normal Windows Update. Go to Settings, then Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

The update is mandatory and carries fixes for hundreds of security flaws, per BleepingComputer. It also covers Bluetooth audio fixes and a laptop AC-to-battery detection fix.

Microsoft says it knows of no new issues, apart from possible audio problems on USB 1.0 audio devices. Some readers on that article report Wi-Fi sign-in trouble on corporate networks, but Microsoft has not confirmed it. If you manage work PCs, test before a wide rollout.

What to check after you install

A quick test takes a minute and tells you whether the change reached your PC. Run through these steps once the update finishes.

  • Download any small PDF, then select it in File Explorer with the Preview pane on. It should render without unblocking.
  • Select a downloaded HTML file. You should see the warning and the “Preview anyway” button instead of a preview.
  • Open Settings, then Windows Update, then Update history, and confirm the October 2026 update is listed.

If the PDF still will not preview, the usual cause is a missing restart or a third-party preview handler. Restarting File Explorer from Task Manager often clears it up.

Why bother? A working Preview pane saves real time when you sort through invoices, reports and attachments, and you no longer have to touch Properties for each one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I preview a downloaded file in File Explorer?

Windows tags internet downloads with the Mark of the Web, and older updates blocked previews for those files. Install the October 2026 update and PDFs should preview again.

Is it safe to preview HTML files now?

Only from sources you trust. HTML stays blocked by default because it was the vector for the NTLM hash leak, and the warning is there for a reason.

Do I still need to unblock files in Properties?

Not for previews. You may still want to unblock a file you trust if a program refuses to open it.

Which Windows 11 versions get this change?

BleepingComputer lists versions 26H2, 25H2, 24H2 and 23H2 for the October 13 updates.

Our take: keep HTML blocked

This is a sensible fix. You get PDF previews back without reopening the hole that caused the block. Install the update, and leave “Preview anyway” for files you would happily open in a browser.
