Gemini Personal Intelligence on Android Auto: What It Can See and How to Turn It On

Google is rolling out Gemini Personal Intelligence on Android Auto, so the assistant in your car can now answer using your own Gmail, Calendar, and Photos. It started on October 20, 2026, and it only works if you opt in. Ask “when does my flight board?” and you get a real answer instead of a web search.

Here is the short version before we get into the details:

  • Rolled out starting October 20, 2026, on Android Auto.
  • Opt-in only. If it is already on in the Gemini app, it carries over to your car.
  • Draws on Gmail, Calendar, Photos, Maps, Search, and YouTube.
  • Cars with Google built-in get it “in the coming months.”
  • Still in beta, so expect the occasional wrong guess.

Those facts come from 9to5Google’s report on the launch.

How Gemini Personal Intelligence on Android Auto works

Until now, Gemini in the car could handle navigation, music, and calls. It just did not know much about you. Personal Intelligence changes that by letting Gemini look through your connected Google apps when you ask a question.

Google’s own examples show the idea. You can ask about a flight and get the gate and on-time status in one answer. You can say “take me to my doctor’s appointment” without typing an address. You can even find a car wash you once saved as a photo and navigate there.

It also uses your habits. Google says Gemini can pick up your usual tastes, such as suggesting an indoor restaurant along your route that fits what you normally like.

What Gemini can pull from your Google apps

Think of it as a search across your own stuff, spoken out loud. This table shows the sources 9to5Google lists and the kind of question each one can help with.

Source Example question in the car
Gmail “What time is my flight and which gate?”
Calendar “Navigate to my next appointment.”
Photos “Take me to the car wash I saved a photo of.”
Maps “Find a place along my route that I would like.”
Search and YouTube Personalised answers that reflect your past interests.

The Gmail and Calendar rows are the biggest time savers. They remove the typing and tapping you should not be doing behind the wheel anyway.

How to turn it on

Nothing connects on its own. According to Tech-ish, you opt in through Gemini’s settings on your phone and pick which apps to link. These are the steps that matter:

  1. Open the Gemini app on your phone and turn on Personal Intelligence in its settings.
  2. Choose which apps to connect, such as Gmail, Calendar, and Photos.
  3. Make sure Keep Activity is on, since Tech-ish says it is required.
  4. For Photos, set up Face Groups, pick your own face, and turn on Estimate missing locations.
  5. Plug in or connect to Android Auto. It should carry over automatically.

Do the Photos setup at home on your phone first. It is not something to fiddle with in a parked car at the school gate.

Tech-ish also notes you need a personal Google account and must be 18 or older. Work, school, and supervised accounts do not qualify. It reports the original launch went to paid AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the US, so what you see may differ by country and plan.

Privacy: what to know before you enable it

This feature reads sensitive material, so it is worth a minute of thought. Google calls it a beta and has said it has not removed mistakes, including linking unrelated topics.

On training, Tech-ish says Gemini does not train directly on your Gmail inbox, Calendar, or Photos images. It does train on summaries, excerpts, and inferences from them. For a short email, that summary could be the whole email. Data from connected apps can also be human-reviewed under the Gemini Apps privacy notice.

There is one more practical point. Neither report says whether personal answers are only spoken or also shown on screen. Until that is clear, only ask things you would be fine with a passenger hearing. Our guide to how Chrome’s Gemini autofill reads your Gmail covers a similar trade-off.

When cars with Google built-in get it

Android Auto is the phone-projection system. Cars with Google built-in run Android Automotive and do not need a phone. Google says these cars get Personal Intelligence “in the coming months,” with no firm date.

There is a catch. In those cars, personalised answers are shared only while your phone is connected. Without it, navigation, music, calls, and general questions still work, but the answers are not tailored to you. Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gemini Personal Intelligence on Android Auto free?

The reports we found do not give a clear answer for Android Auto itself. Tech-ish says the original launch was for paid AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the US. Check your Gemini app settings to see if the option appears for you.

Do I need to turn it on in the car?

No. You enable it in the Gemini app on your phone. If it is already on there, it carries over to Android Auto automatically.

Can I switch Personal Intelligence off?

Yes. It is opt-in, and Tech-ish says you can turn it off at any time in Gemini’s settings. Without it, Gemini still handles navigation, music, and calls.

Does it work in cars with Google built-in?

Not yet. Google says it is coming “in the coming months,” and answers will be personalised only while your phone is connected.

If you drive a lot and live in Gmail and Calendar, this is worth trying. The best part is skipping the address typing and the “where is that confirmation email” hunt. Just keep your expectations realistic: it is a beta, it can misread things, and you should check the Photos and Keep Activity requirements before you rely on it. If you share the car often, leave it off until you know how answers are delivered.
