Google Universal Cart Is Live: One Shopping Cart Across Search and Gemini

The Google Universal Cart is now live in the US, and it gives you one shopping cart that follows you between Google Search and the Gemini app. Save a jacket in AI Mode, add a pair of shoes through Gemini, and both show up in the same place. Google launched it on October 15, 2026.

Here are the basics before we get into how it works.

  • Available now in the US only, in Google Search (including AI Mode) and the Gemini app.
  • Saves items from different stores in one cart.
  • Sends alerts for price drops and restocks.
  • Offers Google Pay checkout at many stores, or a hand-off to the store’s own cart.

Those four points cover most of what you need. The rest is about using it well.

What the Google Universal Cart Actually Does

Think of it as a wish list that can also check out. You save products while you browse on Google, and the cart keeps them together no matter which store sells them. According to Google’s launch post, it draws on more than 60 billion listings in the Shopping Graph.

The cart stays in sync between Search and Gemini. Start a research chat in Gemini on your phone, then finish the same cart in Search on your laptop. No more tabs, screenshots, or notes to yourself.

It is built on the Universal Commerce Protocol, which is how Google connects the cart to participating stores.

Price Drops and Restock Alerts Run in the Background

Once an item is in the cart, Google watches it for you. If the price falls, you get a notification. If something that was sold out comes back, you get one of those too.

This is the feature most people will use first. Waiting on a sale is easier when you aren’t refreshing a product page every morning.

The cart also checks Google Wallet for your saved cards and suggests the one with the best perks. It shows promo codes that might apply. If you already use the receipt tools covered in our Google Wallet receipt scanning guide, the two features fit together nicely.

Two Ways to Check Out

You get a choice at the end. Pay inside the cart with Google Pay, or move your items to the store’s own cart and finish there. Which one you see depends on the merchant.

Option How it works Best for
Google Pay in the cart Pay in a few taps without leaving Google, at stores that support it. Quick buys from a store you already trust.
Transfer to the merchant cart Items move to the store’s site, where you check out as usual. Using store credit, loyalty points, or gift cards.

Either way, the store stays the seller of record. It sends your order confirmation and handles returns and support. Google is the shortcut, not the shop.

Google names Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair, and many Shopify merchants as partners. Its post doesn’t say which of them support in-cart checkout and which only support the transfer, so expect it to vary.

Should You Trust an AI Shopping Cart With Your Cards?

It’s a fair question, and a good habit. The cart uses your Wallet cards to recommend a payment method, so check which cards are saved before you start.

A few steps are worth taking in the first week.

  • Review the cards in Google Wallet and remove any you don’t use.
  • Compare the total in the cart with the final total on the store’s page.
  • Keep order emails, since the store, not Google, handles any dispute.

The cart is Google’s take on a bigger trend. AI assistants are starting to shop on your behalf, and we covered what to set up first in our guide to Shopify AI agents. The same caution applies here.

What We Still Don’t Know

Google’s announcement leaves a few gaps. It doesn’t mention a fee, and it doesn’t give a date for other countries. It also doesn’t list which devices or accounts get access first.

Since the rollout began this week, some people may see it later than others. If you don’t see the cart yet in Search or Gemini, check again over the next few days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Google Universal Cart available outside the US?

Not yet. Google launched it in the US only and hasn’t shared a date for other regions.

Does Google sell the products in the cart?

No. The merchant remains the seller of record, even when you pay with Google Pay. Orders, returns, and support go through the store.

Where do I find the Universal Cart?

It lives in Google Search, including AI Mode, and in the Gemini app. Your saved items appear in both places.

Will it tell me when prices drop?

Yes. Google says it monitors saved items in the background and alerts you to price drops and restocks.

Do I have to check out with Google Pay?

No. You can move your items to the merchant’s own cart and pay on the store’s site instead.

Our take: use it for the alerts and the single cart, and treat the in-cart checkout as optional. A cart that tracks prices across stores is a real time-saver. Still, if you collect store points or have a gift card, finishing on the retailer’s site is often the smarter move. Try it on one purchase first, then decide how much you want it handling.
