Google Wallet receipt scanning is arriving with the October Google Play services update, version 26.40. You’ll be able to scan a paper receipt with your phone and keep it inside Wallet. The same update trims a checkout step in Chrome and cleans up transaction alerts.
The update started rolling out on October 12, according to 9to5Google’s system update changelog. It installs on its own, so you may not need to do anything.
Quick Facts
- Arrives in Google Play services v26.40, dated October 12, 2026.
- Four Wallet changes: receipt scanning, a message center, clearer merchant names, and a faster Chrome checkout.
- Rolls out in stages, so it may not show up on your phone today.
- No regions or device lists have been published yet.
Those four items are the whole Wallet package for now. Google hasn’t published a detailed guide, so a few specifics below are still unconfirmed.
How does Google Wallet receipt scanning work?
The changelog describes it simply as “scan to add receipts.” BGR notes that Google hasn’t explained the mechanics yet.
The likely idea is to point your camera at a paper receipt and have Wallet file it next to your cards and passes. That’s our reading, not something Google has confirmed. Whether it pulls out totals or store names automatically is unknown.
If it works well, it’s handy for returns, expense reports, and warranty claims. Paper receipts fade and vanish, and a photo buried in your gallery is hard to find later.
What else changes in Google Wallet?
Three smaller changes come in the same update. Here’s what each one does.
| Change | What it does | What we don’t know yet |
|---|---|---|
| Message center | A spot inside Wallet for alerts and updates | What kinds of messages it will carry |
| Clearer merchant names | Transaction notifications show who you paid more plainly | How Google picks the names |
| Faster Chrome checkout | Google Pay in Chrome for Android can skip the Payment Request screen | Which merchants qualify |
The checkout change only applies when a merchant receives your name, email, and phone number. TechRadar says it’s for Google Pay used through Chrome for Android.
Clearer merchant names may be the most useful fix. Anyone who has stared at a cryptic charge and wondered what it was will notice.
How to get the Google Play services update
You can check your version in a minute. Follow these steps.
- Open Settings, then Apps, then Google Play services.
- Scroll to the bottom and read the version number.
- If it’s below 26.40, tap App details in store and update.
- Open Wallet and look for the new receipt option.
Even on 26.40, the feature may not appear. As 9to5Google points out, a feature in a changelog doesn’t mean it’s widely available. Some arrive over weeks.
What else is in the October Play update?
The same changelog includes other changes you may care about. Play Store 53.6 adds Ask Play, which gives summaries and citations from user reviews.
It also adds an AI summary for Community Posts. Earlier in the month, Play services added tap support for Find Hub tags, which we covered in our Find Hub NFC guide.
If you use Wallet for IDs too, see our post on the Oklahoma Google Wallet ID. It’s a good example of how Google keeps widening what Wallet holds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Google Wallet receipt scanning available now?
It’s rolling out with Google Play services 26.40. Rollouts are gradual, so you may have to wait a little.
Do I need to install a new app?
No. It comes through a Google Play services update, which usually installs in the background.
Which countries get it?
Google hasn’t said. Neither the changelog nor the early coverage lists regions.
Does the faster checkout work on every site?
Probably not. It applies when the merchant receives your name, email, and phone number.
Our take
Receipt scanning is a small feature with a real payoff, if Google makes it searchable. Update Play services, test it on one receipt, and don’t throw out paper you may need until you trust it.
