One UI 9 Galaxy S24 Update Is Rolling Out: What You Get and How to Check Yours

The One UI 9 Galaxy S24 update is here. Samsung has started pushing its Android 17-based software to the S24 series, Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6, and it has already reached the US and India. If your phone hasn’t shown it yet, that’s normal: the rollout is staged.

Here’s the short version before the details:

  • Start date: October 6 in South Korea, then the US and other markets from around October 12.
  • Devices: Galaxy S24, S24+, S24 Ultra, Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 (the S24 FE shows up in some reports).
  • Size: roughly 3.9GB on a US S24 Ultra, so use Wi-Fi.
  • Security patch: September 5, 2026, not the newer October patch.

Who gets the One UI 9 Galaxy S24 update, and when

Samsung is working through its lineup in waves. The Galaxy S26 went first, and the S25, Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 followed on September 28, according to Tech-ish, which cites Android Authority for the firmware details.

The S24 family is wave three. Here’s how the waves look so far:

Wave Devices Where it stands
First Galaxy S26 series Already updated
Second S25 series, Z Fold7, Z Flip7 Started September 28
Third S24 series, Z Fold6, Z Flip6 Korea from October 6; US and India from about October 12-13
Reportedly next S23 series, Z Fold5, Z Flip5 Listed by Tech Advisor, no dates yet

That table shows why your friend’s phone may have it while yours doesn’t. Model, country and carrier all change the timing. One German report says there is still no firm date for regular devices there.

In the US, Android Authority says users reported the update on T-Mobile and AT&T S24 phones, plus unlocked Fold6 and Flip6 units. Those are user reports, not a Samsung announcement, so treat the carrier list as a snapshot rather than a promise.

What’s new in One UI 9 on your phone

Samsung hasn’t posted a full US changelog yet. Based on the reports so far, the update brings more Galaxy AI features, a more customizable Quick Panel, privacy changes, Samsung Health upgrades and tweaks across Samsung’s own apps.

Tech Advisor and the German report also name a few specific items:

  • A location indicator that shows which app is using your location.
  • Call Brief, which summarizes what a call is about while it’s happening.
  • My FanCam, which tracks one subject in a video and reframes the clip around it.
  • Improvements to Samsung DeX and Samsung Notes.

If you mainly care about battery life and speed, the honest answer is that nobody has published solid benchmarks yet. Wait for real-world reports from owners before expecting big gains there.

Not every item is confirmed for every S24 model. Some features depend on your region and a signed-in Samsung account, so don’t be surprised if a friend in another country sees something you don’t.

How to check for the update and get ready

You don’t have to wait for the notification. A manual check often finds a staged update earlier, and a little prep avoids most problems.

Do this in order:

  1. Open Settings, then Software update, then tap Download and install.
  2. Connect to stable Wi-Fi and plug in the charger. The download is close to 4GB.
  3. Back up photos and chats with Smart Switch, Google One or your preferred tool.
  4. Free up at least 6-8GB of storage so the install doesn’t stall.

The backup step feels boring, but it’s your safety net if anything goes wrong. If you use Samsung Gallery sync, our guide to Samsung Gallery and Google Photos sync shows how to keep photos safe in the cloud.

Should you install it right away?

For most people, yes, but you have no reason to rush the very first day. Early rollouts sometimes hide small bugs, and Samsung’s September wave was reported as bumpy by some outlets.

One thing to know: the build still carries the September 5 security patch. The Galaxy S26 already has the October patch, so expect a follow-up update soon.

Also, this isn’t the end of Samsung’s roadmap. A newer release is already in testing, as we covered in our One UI 9.5 testing guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is One UI 9 based on Android 17?

Yes. One UI 9 is Samsung’s skin on top of Android 17, so you get Google’s new platform changes plus Samsung’s own features.

Why don’t I see the One UI 9 update on my Galaxy S24?

Samsung releases updates in stages by country, model and carrier. Check manually under Settings > Software update, and give it a few days if nothing appears.

Will the Galaxy S23 get One UI 9?

Tech Advisor lists the S23 series, Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 among devices getting it, but I couldn’t find a confirmed date from Samsung. Watch your Software update screen.

Can I go back to One UI 8 after updating?

Samsung doesn’t offer a simple rollback, and downgrading usually means wiping the phone. Back up first and assume the update is one-way.

Our take

If you own an S24, Fold6 or Flip6, update once it appears and you’ve backed up. Waiting a few days costs you little, but there’s no good reason to skip it, since it’s your path to the Android 17 features and the newer Galaxy AI tools.
