One UI 9 Update Is Rolling Out: What Galaxy Owners Get, and the Setup Freeze to Avoid

The One UI 9 update is now rolling out to Galaxy phones, and it brings Android 17, new Galaxy AI tricks, and a redesigned Samsung Health. It also has one known catch: some Galaxy S26 Ultra owners got stuck on the setup screen after installing it.

Here’s what you actually get, who gets it, and what to do if your phone freezes.

Quick Facts

  • Samsung started the official One UI 9 rollout on September 16, 2026, beginning with the Galaxy S26, S26+ and S26 Ultra.
  • It is built on Android 17 and first shipped on the Galaxy Z Fold8, Fold8 Ultra and Flip8.
  • Older phones are coming in stages. Samsung hasn’t published a full model list or dates.
  • A setup-screen freeze has been reported on the S26 Ultra and a few other Ultra models.

What the One UI 9 update adds to your Galaxy

Samsung’s own rollout announcement leans heavily on AI features. Most of them need a Samsung Account, and what you see depends on your country and model.

The headline additions are these.

  • My FanCam tracks a person you pick in recorded video and keeps them centered.
  • Now Brief gets editable cards for health, weather and video.
  • Now Nudge offers suggestions in context, like pulling up a reservation while you text.
  • Interpreter gains a Thread View so you can look back at earlier translations.
  • Voice Recorder summaries now use headings and tables.

None of this changes how you use the phone day to day. It mostly trims small chores.

Privacy and security changes worth knowing

Samsung added a Security Brief to Now Brief that flags malware, unknown-source apps and unnecessary permissions. Privacy Alerts use on-device AI to spot apps that reach for permissions in the background.

According to 9to5Google, the update also adds a location indicator and a quick lock-down option that turns off biometric unlock. That second one is handy if you ever need to lock your phone down fast.

Samsung says Scam Detection is also expanding to more countries and languages, with Japan, Canada and India named as upcoming markets.

Samsung Health, Bixby and the visual refresh

The same 9to5Google report says Samsung Health has been redesigned with customizable home cards, trend charts, a Fitness Index, a Hearing tracker and cycle tracking.

Bixby can now be raised-to-talk, so you don’t need a wake word. You can also manage and pin your chat history. Elsewhere you’ll see a redesigned lock screen clock, a more customizable Quick Panel and DeX improvements.

Here’s how the rollout looks so far, based on Samsung’s announcement and press reports.

Device Status Source
Galaxy Z Fold8, Fold8 Ultra, Flip8 Shipped with One UI 9 Samsung Newsroom
Galaxy S26, S26+, S26 Ultra Rolling out since Sept 16, in waves Samsung Newsroom
US S26 units T-Mobile first, then unlocked 9to5Google
Other Galaxy phones and tablets Gradual, no dates given Samsung Newsroom

Carrier and region differences are normal for Samsung. Your update may show up days after a friend’s.

The One UI 9 update freeze: what went wrong

After installing, some Galaxy S26 Ultra owners got stuck on the setup or welcome screen. Android Headlines reported on October 22 that a Samsung community manager tied it to the update. The suspected cause is a WebView problem loading Samsung Account policies, which shows as an error that policies.account.samsung.com can’t load.

The same report says users on the Galaxy S24 and S25 Ultra described similar startup freezes or “Access Denied” errors.

If you’re stuck, these workarounds came from affected users and are not official fixes.

  • Update your web browser to the latest version.
  • Sign in to your Samsung Account over Wi-Fi.
  • If the app won’t let you in, use the Samsung Account website instead.
  • Some people force-rebooted, or started in Safe Mode and switched on airplane mode first.

Samsung may already have a fix. A Sammy Fans report from October 26 says a new One UI 9 update is out that addresses the freezing issue. I couldn’t open the full article, so check your own Software update screen before relying on it.

How to get the update safely

Open Settings, tap Software update, then Download and install. Do it on Wi-Fi with at least 50% battery. The beta build for enrolled users was about 650MB, per 9to5Google, so the stable download may differ.

Back up first, and sign in to your Samsung Account before you start. That may help you avoid the policy-page error, though Samsung hasn’t called it a fix. If your phone is also waiting on the monthly patch, our Samsung October 2026 security patch post lists which devices have it.

Android 17 is landing across brands, too. See how other makers are doing in our Motorola Android 17 update list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the One UI 9 update based on Android 17?

Yes. Samsung’s beta announcement in May said it is built on Android 17.

Which Galaxy phones get the One UI 9 update first?

The Galaxy Z Fold8, Fold8 Ultra and Flip8 launched with it. The Galaxy S26 series started receiving it on September 16, 2026.

Will my older Galaxy phone get One UI 9?

Samsung says other Galaxy devices will get it gradually but hasn’t named models or dates. Privacy Alerts are listed as supported on recent phones, including the S23 series and later.

What should I do if my phone freezes on the setup screen?

Try a Wi-Fi connection, update your browser, or sign in through the Samsung Account website. Then check for a newer update.

Should you install it now?

If you have a Galaxy S26, yes, but wait a day or two if you rely on the phone for work. Check that a newer build is available first, because the freeze report is fresh. Everyone else can sit tight; nothing in One UI 9 is worth rushing an older phone for.
