The Windows 11 26H1 November update is already in the Release Preview Channel, with the final release due on November 10, 2026. But unless you just bought a new Snapdragon X2 laptop, you will never see it on your PC.
That sounds odd, so here is the short version: 26H1 is a special build for new Arm hardware, not a normal yearly upgrade. Most people stay on 25H2 and move to 26H2 instead.
Here are the facts you need first.
- Preview build: 28000.3351 (KB5127653), out October 16, 2026 in Release Preview.
- Final release: scheduled for the November 10, 2026 Patch Tuesday.
- Who gets it: PCs that shipped with 26H1, starting with Snapdragon X2 Plus, Elite and Extreme laptops.
- Not an upgrade path from 25H2 or earlier, so Intel and AMD PCs are never offered it.
If you only want to know whether to wait for it, you can stop here: you can’t. The rest of this post explains why, what the update contains, and what to do instead.
What is Windows 11 26H1, and why can’t you install it?
Think of 26H1 as a platform release. Microsoft built it to support new silicon, and it comes preinstalled on select new Arm64 PCs. Coverage from Pureinfotech confirms Microsoft does not offer it as an upgrade from earlier versions.
So there is no hidden toggle and no workaround worth chasing. If your laptop didn’t ship with it, it isn’t meant for it.
Microsoft made this clear earlier in the year. TechRadar reported that the update wouldn’t come to current PCs. Your existing machine instead gets the yearly update, which we covered in our guide to installing Windows 11 26H2.
Which version should your PC be on?
A quick table makes this easy to sort out.
| Your PC | Version you get | Does it get 26H1? |
|---|---|---|
| New Snapdragon X2 laptop | Windows 11 26H1 (preinstalled) | Yes, it ships with it |
| Older Snapdragon X or Arm PC | 25H2, then 26H2 | No |
| Any Intel or AMD PC | 25H2, then 26H2 | No, never |
| Existing PC on 24H2 | Update to 25H2, then 26H2 | No |
Check your version under Settings, System, About if you aren’t sure. The takeaway: for almost everyone, the version number to watch is 26H2, not 26H1.
What’s new in the Windows 11 26H1 Release Preview update
The November update is a cumulative Windows 11 update, so it carries a long list of small improvements. Several of them also appear in other Windows 11 builds, so you may see them elsewhere too.
These are the changes that most people will actually notice.
- File Explorer gets a “Preview anyway” option for HTML files, and Home remembers which sections you expanded.
- A new Tips widget shows short Windows tips on the Widgets board or lock screen.
- Touchpads gain single-finger edge scrolling and automatic scrolling.
- The Copilot key can be remapped to Right Ctrl or the Context Menu key.
- A new “Open apps maximized” accessibility setting.
- Magnifier gets a refreshed toolbar, and Emoji 17.0 is supported.
The touchpad and key changes are small, but they are the kind of thing you use every day. We’ve already looked at the Copilot key remap separately.
Fixes worth knowing about
Some of the fixes are bigger than the features. Remote Desktop connections that failed with error 0xC000000D for non-admin users, when Administrator protection was on, are fixed.
Microsoft also fixed a Bluetooth audio streaming crash (error 0x139) and a bug that misread whether a plugged-in laptop was on AC or battery. A BitLocker pre-boot PIN fix helps stop accidental TPM lockouts.
There is also a new Manitoba time zone (UTC-05:00) ahead of its November 1, 2026 change. The source lists no known issues for this build, but that can change after release.
Recovery and management upgrades for IT teams
The Windows Recovery Environment can now reuse saved Wi-Fi profiles, so a broken PC can get online without retyping a password. It also supports an MDM remote management plug-in.
Kiosk mode disables a few more keyboard shortcuts, and the Installed apps page now shows app version numbers. None of this is flashy. But if you set up a batch of new laptops, small things like saved Wi-Fi profiles in recovery can save you a lot of back-and-forth. Home users will probably never notice them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install Windows 11 26H1 on my current PC?
No. Microsoft says 26H1 is not an upgrade from 25H2 or earlier. It only ships preinstalled on select new Arm64 PCs.
When does the Windows 11 26H1 update release?
The Release Preview build came out on October 16, 2026. The final release is scheduled for November 10, 2026, and rollout is gradual.
Will Intel and AMD PCs ever get 26H1?
No. Microsoft says Intel and AMD PCs will never be offered it. They follow the 25H2 and 26H2 path instead.
Is 26H2 a better update than 26H1?
They serve different PCs, so it isn’t a contest. If you have a normal PC, 26H2 is your update and 26H1 isn’t an option.
Should you care about it?
Only if you own or manage a new Snapdragon X2 machine. In that case, expect a decent November update with real fixes for Remote Desktop and Bluetooth.
Everyone else can ignore the 26H1 name and keep their eye on 26H2. Don’t spend time hunting for a way to force it on an unsupported PC; there is nothing to gain from it.
