Windows 11 26H2 is rolling out now, and it installs like a normal monthly update: one small download and one restart. If your PC runs 24H2 or 25H2, open Settings, go to Windows Update, and turn on “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” to see it sooner.
Here are the quick facts before you start:
- Microsoft began the phased rollout on September 29, 2026.
- It works on PCs running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2.
- It arrives as an enablement package, so the download is small.
- Home and Pro editions get updates until October 10, 2028.
- PCs on Windows 11 26H1 can’t upgrade to it directly.
That list covers most of what you need. The rest of this post explains the catches.
What Windows 11 26H2 actually changes
Don’t expect a flashy redesign. According to BetaNews, Microsoft’s John Cable described the install as “similar to a monthly update,” and that tells you most of the story.
The code for 26H2 has been arriving on 24H2 and 25H2 PCs through monthly updates for a while. The enablement package mostly switches those pieces on. That’s why the download is small and the restart is quick. Microsoft also calls it the Windows 11 2026 Update.
The visible changes are mostly features that shipped switched off in 25H2. On business and school PCs, Windows settings backup, app-specific taskbar actions and several File Explorer improvements are now on by default. The sources I checked only spell out those commercial defaults, so poke around Settings and File Explorer after you install.
Because 26H2 shares a code base with 24H2 and 25H2, there’s no full operating system swap involved. That keeps the risk low. It also means the update won’t feel dramatically different on day one, so judge it by stability and support, not by new toys.
The better reason to install is the support clock. Installing 26H2 restarts your support lifecycle: 24 months for Home and Pro, 36 months for Enterprise and Education.
How to get the Windows 11 2026 Update today
The fastest route takes a few clicks and one restart. Back up anything you can’t replace first, then follow these steps:
- Open Settings and select Windows Update.
- Turn on “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.”
- Select Check for updates.
- When the Windows 11, version 26H2 option appears, select Download and install, then restart.
That toggle is what moves you up the queue. BleepingComputer reports that devices with it enabled are eligible first, and the update then installs after a single restart.
Prefer to do it by hand? Pureinfotech notes you can use the Windows 11 26H2 Installation Assistant or the Media Creation Tool. An in-place upgrade keeps your files, apps and settings. A clean install wipes them, so pick that only if you want a fresh start.

Business admins have extra options. Commercial and education customers can deploy 26H2 now through Windows Autopatch and the Microsoft 365 admin center. Microsoft suggests starting with a small pilot group to test critical apps before a wider push.
Why your PC may not offer Windows 11 26H2 yet
A missing button isn’t necessarily a problem. Microsoft says the rollout is phased and will keep expanding over the next few months.
Safeguard holds are the other common reason. If Microsoft knows about a compatibility issue with your hardware or drivers, it holds the update back until a fix is ready. Forcing it with a manual installer is a bad idea. Check the Windows release health hub for known issues first.
One group is shut out for now. Per BetaNews, PCs on Windows 11 26H1 can’t move straight to 26H2 because 26H1 uses a different Windows core. Microsoft says those devices will get a path to a future release.
If you’re still on 24H2 Home or Pro, this is urgent. Support ended on October 13, so your PC no longer receives security updates. Our post on the KB5127648 zero-day fix covers what the final 24H2 patch included.
Windows 11 support dates at a glance
Here’s how the three current versions compare, based on Microsoft’s release health table.
| Version | Home and Pro updates end | Enterprise and Education end |
|---|---|---|
| 24H2 | Ended October 13, 2026 | October 12, 2027 |
| 25H2 | October 12, 2027 | October 10, 2028 |
| 26H2 | October 10, 2028 | October 9, 2029 |
The takeaway is simple. Moving from 25H2 to 26H2 buys Home and Pro users roughly one extra year of security updates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Windows 11 26H2 a big download?
No. It’s an enablement package, so you get a small download and a single restart.
Will I lose my files or apps?
An in-place upgrade through Windows Update keeps them. Back up anyway, because it takes five minutes and saves a bad day.
What happens if I stay on 24H2?
Home and Pro PCs stopped getting security and preview updates on October 13, 2026. Enterprise and Education editions stay supported until October 12, 2027.
Can a Windows 11 26H1 PC install 26H2?
Not directly. Microsoft says 26H1 devices will have a path to a future release.
Our take: install it this week
If you’re on 24H2 Home or Pro, install 26H2 now, because staying put means running without security patches. If you’re on 25H2 and everything works, there’s no panic, but the toggle is free and the extra year of support is real. Anyone who depends on their PC for work should wait a few days and glance at release health for holds before pressing the button.
