Windows 11 26H1 gets its October update on Patch Tuesday, October 13, and it adds a movable taskbar, a cleaner Start menu, and a quieter Search. It only matters if you own a new Snapdragon X2 PC, because 26H1 is not offered to anyone else.
The new build is 28000.3086 (KB5124006). Here is what changes, what gets removed, and what to check before you install it.
- Build: 28000.3086, KB5124006
- Rollout date: October 13, 2026 (Patch Tuesday)
- Who gets it: new PCs with Snapdragon X2 Plus, Elite or Elite Extreme chips
- Removed: the WMIC command-line tool, on new 26H1 installs
- Support ends: March 14, 2028 for Home and Pro
Those five points cover most of the story. The sections below explain the parts that can trip you up.
Who can actually get Windows 11 26H1?
Windows 11 26H1 is a “hardware-optimized” release. It ships preinstalled on select new devices, and it is not an upgrade for older PCs, as Windows Latest explains. Microsoft lists three chips: Snapdragon X2 Plus, X2 Elite and X2 Elite Extreme.
That leaves a lot of people out. The table shows where your PC lands.
| Your PC | Gets 26H1? | What you stay on |
|---|---|---|
| New PC with Snapdragon X2 Plus, Elite or Elite Extreme | Yes, preinstalled | 26H1 monthly updates |
| First-generation Snapdragon X Copilot+ PC | No | 25H2, then 26H2 |
| Any Intel or AMD PC | No | 25H2, then 26H2 |
Windows Latest also reports that Microsoft is expected to merge 26H1 and 26H2 into 27H2 in the second half of 2027. That is a forecast, not a confirmed plan, so treat it as a heads-up only.
If you are not on a Snapdragon X2 machine, you have not missed anything. Your PC keeps getting normal updates, and our Windows 11 26H2 guide covers the update that is built for you.
What the October update changes in Windows 11 26H1
The headline change is the taskbar. You can now move it to the top, left or right edge, and a smaller size option cuts its height. According to Pureinfotech, touch gestures and the Search box do not work in the new positions, and the small size works only at the top or bottom.
The Start menu gets more control too. You can pick Small, Large or Automatic size, and “Recommended” is renamed “Recent.” Pinned, Recent and All sections can each be shown or hidden, and you can hide your account name and picture.
Search is calmer. The home screen is simpler, result labels are clearer, and you can turn off web and Microsoft Store results. Windows also indexes folders you use often.
A few smaller fixes are worth knowing:
- File Explorer opens Home faster and scrolls the Recommended carousel better by touch.
- Virtual desktop switching is smoother, and Display settings are more reliable.
- A File History bug that showed false “Reconnect your drive” errors is fixed.
- Windows Update returns the PC to sleep if you had put it to sleep by hand.
IT admins get a few extras as well. Administrator protection is rolling out but stays off by default, and Autopilot device preparation device association is now generally available.
The File History fix matters most if you back up to an external or network drive. Those backups could fail before.
WMIC is gone: will your scripts break?
On new 26H1 installs, Microsoft removes the WMIC command-line tool by default. It is also no longer offered as a Feature on Demand, so you cannot add it back the easy way. WMI itself, the system underneath, stays supported.
This hits older admin scripts and a few legacy apps that call wmic to read serial numbers or hardware details. If you manage Snapdragon X2 laptops, search your scripts for it before you roll out the update.
The usual replacement is PowerShell. A command like Get-CimInstance Win32_BIOS returns the same kind of data and works on every current Windows 11 build.
Two known issues to check first
Pureinfotech lists two known problems with the build. Both are mostly a concern for work PCs rather than home laptops.
- Some domain-joined devices can lose their secure trust relationship with Active Directory, which blocks sign-in.
- USB Audio Class 1.0 devices may fail to start or play sound, sometimes with a Code 10 error.
If you use a USB headset or audio interface every day, wait a week before updating. IT teams should test on one domain-joined machine first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install Windows 11 26H1 on my current PC?
No. It is only offered on new devices with Snapdragon X2 chips. Intel, AMD and first-generation Snapdragon X PCs will not be offered it.
How long is Windows 11 26H1 supported?
Home and Pro editions are supported until March 14, 2028. Enterprise and Education editions run until March 13, 2029, per Windows Latest.
Is the Windows 11 26H1 update the same as 26H2?
No. 26H2 is the update for all other PCs. They are separate releases for different hardware.
Does Windows 11 26H1 remove WMI?
No. Only the WMIC command-line tool is removed. WMI is still supported, and PowerShell commands that use it keep working.
Our take
If you own a Snapdragon X2 laptop, install this one, but give it a few days if you rely on a USB audio device or a work domain. The taskbar and Start options are real quality-of-life wins. If you have any other PC, ignore the 26H1 noise entirely. Your update is 26H2, and it needs no action beyond a restart. Compare the chips themselves in our Snapdragon X2 Elite vs Intel breakdown.
