Windows 11 26H2 is out, and it’s the quietest Windows update in years. Microsoft released it on September 29, 2026 as a small download that needs one restart, and it adds almost nothing you haven’t already seen. The reason to care is simple: installing it resets your support clock.
Here’s the short version before we get into the details.
- Released: September 29, 2026
- Works for: PCs on Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2
- How it installs: a small enablement package and a single restart
- Support: 24 months for Home and Pro, 36 months for Enterprise and Education
- Left out: PCs that shipped with Windows 11 26H1 can’t update to it
If you only have ten seconds, that list is the whole story.
What the Windows 11 2026 Update actually changes
Not much, and Microsoft says so openly. According to BleepingComputer, version 26H2 has no exclusive new features. Most of what it “brings together” has been trickling out through monthly updates all year.
That’s because 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 share one servicing branch and codebase. Your PC already has the files. The update simply switches on what was sitting there, which is how an enablement package works. We covered one of those monthly previews in our KB5124010 breakdown, and 26H2 is where that kind of drip-fed work gets a version number.
Business PCs notice the most. Windows Central reports that features like Windows settings backup and some File Explorer improvements are now on by default on commercial devices. Microsoft calls the whole thing a “predictable and low-disruption update.”
So why release it at all? A named version gives Microsoft and IT teams a clean marker for support dates and deployment. Organizations can manage the rollout through Windows Autopatch and the Microsoft 365 admin center, per gHacks, while home users just see a normal update prompt.
How to get Windows 11 26H2 today
Microsoft is using a controlled rollout, so it may not show up on your PC right away. You can nudge it along without any downloads from third-party sites.
- Open Settings and go to Windows Update.
- Turn on “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.”
- Select Check for updates, then download and install 26H2 when it appears.
- Restart once when asked.
Afterward, press Win + R, type winver and confirm it says version 26H2. Pureinfotech lists the enablement package as KB5121794, which is handy if you’re hunting for it in update history.
Who can’t install Windows 11 26H2: the 26H1 catch
The one real gotcha is 26H1. Microsoft says PCs that shipped with that version can’t update to 26H2 because 26H1 is built on a different Windows core. Here’s how the versions line up.
| Your version | Can you install 26H2? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 24H2 | Yes | Direct update through the enablement package |
| Windows 11 25H2 | Yes | Single restart, similar to a monthly patch |
| Windows 11 26H1 | No | Different core; no upgrade path to 26H2 yet |
If you bought a brand-new PC this year, check winver first. Owners of 26H1 machines will have to wait for a future Windows release, according to gHacks.
Why 24H2 owners shouldn’t wait on this Windows 11 update
Installing 26H2 resets your lifecycle. You get 24 months of updates on Home and Pro, or 36 months on Enterprise and Education, counted from the release. That is the real prize here.
It also matters because Windows 11 24H2 reaches end of support on October 13, as we explained in our 24H2 end-of-support guide. Windows will eventually install 26H2 on its own as your version nears its end date. Doing it now just means you pick the restart time instead of Windows.
The risk looks low. Because the three versions share a codebase, the update is closer to a big monthly patch than an old-style feature upgrade.
A quick checklist before you update
The update is small, but a few minutes of prep never hurts. Run through these first.
- Let Windows finish any pending updates and restart once.
- Run
winverto confirm you’re on 24H2 or 25H2, not 26H1. - Save your work and back up anything you can’t replace.
- Plug in your laptop so the restart doesn’t stall on battery.
None of this is specific to 26H2. It’s just the cheap insurance that makes any Windows restart boring, which is what you want.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Windows 11 26H2 a free update?
Yes for eligible PCs. It arrives through Windows Update like a regular patch, and you don’t need to buy anything.
Do I need to reinstall Windows or lose my files?
No. It’s a small enablement package with one restart. Your apps, settings and files stay where they are.
Why don’t I see 26H2 in Windows Update yet?
Microsoft is rolling it out in waves. Turn on the “latest updates” toggle in Windows Update, then check again. If you’re on 26H1, you won’t be offered it at all.
Will 26H2 break my apps?
Unlikely. Microsoft says the update has no compatibility concerns, and the underlying system matches 24H2 and 25H2.
Should you install it now?
Yes, if you’re on 24H2 or 25H2. It costs you one restart, nothing important changes, and you buy yourself two more years of security updates. Just don’t expect a flashy upgrade, because Windows 11 26H2 is plumbing, and that’s exactly why it’s safe.
