The Windows 11 October 2026 update (KB5127648) is out now, and it’s mostly a pile of small, useful changes rather than one big feature. You can remap the Copilot key, open apps maximized, and scroll with one finger on your touchpad. One feature also disappears: PC-to-PC Migration.
It rolled out on October 13 as the regular Patch Tuesday release. Here’s what you’ll actually notice.
- Update: KB5127648 for Windows 11 26H2, 25H2 and 24H2, released October 13, 2026.
- Who gets it: Everyone on a supported version. It’s a mandatory security update.
- Headline changes: Copilot key remapping, “Open apps maximized,” and new touchpad scrolling.
- Removed: PC-to-PC Migration in Windows Backup.
- Rollout: Fixes land right away. Some features appear over the next days or weeks.
Those five points cover most of what matters. The rest of this post explains how to use each change.
Windows 11 October 2026 update: the changes you can use today
Microsoft says this update carries over everything from the September optional preview, so there’s a lot packed in. According to BleepingComputer, 25H2 and 26H2 get the same fixes, with no version-specific changes.
This table sums up the changes most people will care about.
| Change | What it does | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Copilot key remap | Makes the key act as Right Ctrl or the Context Menu key | Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard |
| Open apps maximized | New app windows open full screen by default | Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects |
| Touchpad scrolling | One-finger scrolling from the edge, plus auto-scroll | Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad |
| Camera Roll backup | Backs up phone photos to OneDrive, set up with a QR code | Settings (rolling out gradually) |
| Tips widget | Short tips on the Widgets board and lock screen | Widgets board |
| Emoji 17.0 | New emoji characters and refined designs | Windows key + period |
Because of the gradual rollout, a setting you don’t see yet isn’t a sign the install failed. Check again in a few days.
Copilot key remap: get a useful key back
Plenty of newer laptops swapped the right Ctrl key for a Copilot key. If you never use Copilot, that key has been dead weight, and it broke shortcuts you relied on.
The new setting fixes that. Open Settings, go to Bluetooth & devices, then Keyboard, and reassign the key to act as Right Ctrl or the Context Menu key. Microsoft confirmed the option earlier, as TweakTown reported.
Open apps maximized and better touchpad scrolling
A new accessibility option under Visual effects makes app windows open maximized. It helps if you always drag windows to full size anyway. Older apps may ignore it, so don’t be surprised if a few still open small.
The touchpad gets two additions: single-finger scrolling from the edge of the pad, and automatic scrolling. If you want a closer look at how those work, see our guide to Windows 11 touchpad scrolling.
File Explorer previews and other smaller fixes
Since late 2025, File Explorer has blocked previews for files downloaded from the internet. That was a security measure against a credential-leak trick using HTML files. Now PDFs and other non-HTML files preview normally again.
HTML files still show a warning, but a “Preview anyway” button lets you view them. You no longer need to unblock each file in Properties first.
The update also fixes Bluetooth audio crashes (error code 0x139), improves LE Audio and Bluetooth microphone compatibility, and repairs File History backups that failed after the September security updates. A Tips widget, a refreshed Magnifier toolbar, and Emoji 17.0 round out the list.
What’s gone: PC-to-PC Migration
Microsoft removed PC-to-PC Migration from Windows Backup. It was meant to move files and settings straight from your old PC to a new one during setup.
Microsoft now points people to Windows Backup with OneDrive instead. That works, but it means your files travel through the cloud, so check your OneDrive storage before you set up a new PC.
Should you worry about 24H2 and known issues?
If you run Windows 11 24H2 Home or Pro, this is the last update that edition will get. Enterprise and Education editions stay supported until October 2027, per Windows Latest. Our guide to moving from 24H2 to 26H2 for free walks you through the upgrade.
Microsoft says it knows of no new issues with this release, though it warns some PCs may hit audio problems with older USB 1.0 audio devices. Some readers on BleepingComputer reported Wi-Fi trouble with enterprise (WPA2-Enterprise) networks, but those reports are unconfirmed. Since this was also a big security month, our look at the October 2026 Patch Tuesday zero-days explains why you shouldn’t delay.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I install the Windows 11 October 2026 update?
Open Settings, select Windows Update, and click Check for updates. You can also download KB5127648 from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
Why don’t I see the Copilot key setting yet?
Microsoft rolls many features out gradually. Install the update, restart, and check again over the next few days.
Can I still use PC-to-PC Migration?
No. Microsoft removed it. Use Windows Backup with OneDrive to move your files and settings to a new PC.
Is KB5127648 a security update?
Yes. It’s the October 2026 Patch Tuesday release, so it includes security fixes along with the new features.
Does this update fix the File Explorer preview problem?
Mostly. PDFs and other non-HTML files preview again. HTML files need one click on “Preview anyway.”
Our take
Install it. The security fixes alone justify it, and the Copilot key remap is a quiet win if your keyboard lost its Right Ctrl. Just don’t count on PC-to-PC Migration if you’re buying a new laptop soon. Plan on OneDrive instead, and make sure you have enough space first.
